LORENZO J. TRUSSELL, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CORNELIUS S. HARTOUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR FASTENING PRESSER-FEET FOR SEWING-MACHINES TO THEIR BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,795, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed December 11, 1883. (Model) T0 (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZO J. TRUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening PYSSET-FG6D for Sewing-Machines to their Bars,of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a ready means of attaching and detach ing presser-feet, hemniers, ruftlers, tuckers, corders, button-hole attachments, and other devices to and from their bars, which shall at the same time be capable of holding them rigidly in position. For this purpose I provide thelowor end of the bar with a longitudinal slot of suitable form to receive the shank of the press er-foot, and with a spring-catch adapted to hold the shank firmly in position.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I represents a presserbar and foot fastened together according to my invention. Fig. II is a vertical section of the same. Fig. III is a detached view of a modified form of the invention.
The bar 1 has at its lower end alongitudinal slot, 2, the lower end or margin of which has a central angular stud or elevation, 3, and the upper end of which is ehamfered so as to-forin a wider opening at the side where the shank enters than at the other. The bar is bored out imn'iediately above the slot, and within this bore is set a spring-bolt, 4, the end of which is beveled on that side toward the larger opening of the slot in the bar to permit the raising of the bolt by the insertion of the shank of the presser-foot. A button, 7, attached to a pin on the bolt 4.,enables the raising of the said bolt by hand, and a slide, 8, in which said button travels, limits the motion of the bolt. \Vhen in its lower'position the end 5 of the bolt occupies a notch, 9, in the upper end of the shank 5 of the presser-foot 6, so' as to prevent the same from falling out. The lower end of the-shank is provided with an angular recess of corresponding shape to the ridge in the bottom of the slot 2. It will be seen that when the shank of the presser-foot is inserted in the slot 2 it will be held in position notwithstanding any upward pressure on the foot, and that the spring-bolt merely 5 serves to prevent the foot from falling out on the raising of the bar. The slotniay be either fromfront to back, as in Figs. land 2, or from side to side in the bar, as in Fig. 3.
Iam aware that it is not new to secure a presser-foot or other attachment to a sewingmachine without the aid of a binding-screw, and do not claim such, broadly, as my inventiou.
Having thus described my invention, the
1 with a transverse lug and a spring-bolt pro jecting into the said slot from opposite sides,
respectively, in combination with a presserfoot having a shank formed with edges complementary to those of the slot and lug there in and engaged by the bolt, as set forth.
2. The )rcsscr-foot bar havin a vertical slot near its lower extremity, one end of said slot having a lug projecting thereinto and the opposite end having achamfered abutting surface or seat, in combination with the presserfoot having a shank formed with a notch and with edges complementary to those of the slot, and a spring-bolt adapted to enter said notch, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
LORENZO J. TRUSSELL.
