NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI PENTZ, CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO GEORGE N. YOHE AND JOSEPH L. HIGBY, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,604, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed September 1, 1884.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI PENTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of to this specification, and to the letters and figi ures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a front view showing the check in position when the door is closed. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the check in position for holding the door. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of sliding bar. Fig. 5 is a detached view of frame. Fig. 6 is a detached view of tensionscrew.
The present invention has relation to that class of door-checks designed to hold the door at any point desired, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and durable check that may be readily applied to a door as may be desired.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s.
%n the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame, which is substantially of the 0 form shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, and is at tached to the door by means of suitable screws. The bottom or lower end of this frame is open, so as to receive the head a on the sliding bar B, as seen in Fig. 1. The top or upper end of the frame A is provided with the recess [2, so as to admit of a longer movement of the sliding bar B. The back of the frame A is provided with a metallic plate, which fits in the frame, and is for the purpose of forming 0 a suitable bearing-surface for the sliding bar (No model.)
B. This bar is provided with a slot for the passage of the screw 0, and permits said bar to be'moved up and down. The top of the sliding bar B is provided with a knob or handle, d, to operate said bar. The screw 0 is provided with the collars D D, and between said collars is located the rubber block E, said block being small enough to pass through the opening I The object of the rubber block is to provide a cushion, so as not to have the sliding bar B held too rigid, and at the same time have said barfirmly hold. the door in any desired position when said bar is forced upon the floor. The bottom of the head a may be-milled, as seen in Fig. 4, if desired, or it may have a smooth surface.
To operate my invention the sliding bar B is raised, as seen in Fig. 1, when. it is desired to close the door. When it is desired to hold the door, the bafB is forced down, as seen in Fig. 2.
I am aware that a sliding bar as applied to d00r-bolts is not new, and do not claim such as my invention; but
WhatI do claim as new, and desire to secure 6; by Letters Patent, is
In a door-check, the combination of the frame A, provided with a movable metallic back plate and the opening b, of the sliding bar B, provided with the head ct and the knob or handle d, of the collars D D, and the rubber block E, all arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEVI PENTZ. Witnesses:
FRED. W. BOND,
ED. F. FREASE.
