llniTnn STATES PATENT @rrrcn EMIL N IGGLI, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
DOOR=CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,8dd, dated January 13, 1885. Application filed December 10, i883. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL NIGGLI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in a device for holding in an open position doors; and it consists in providing the door with a sliding rod, which is adapted to be actuated so as to engage with a retaining-block attached to the floor by the knob-shank, whichis provided with a dog for raising and lowering the rod, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side View ofa door, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the stop or retaining block, which is secured to the floor; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the casting, which is secured to the knob-shank and sliding bolt or rod.
A represents a block, which is provided at its base with side flanges, a, with countersunk perforations, through which pass screws for attaching the same to the floor, which block is attached thereto near the base-board, so as to engage with the rod and hold the door in an open position. The upper portion of the block A is provided centrally with a recess, 2), having vertical inner walls. One of the upper ends of the upwardly-projecting portion of the stop adjacent to the recess Z) is inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, and the recess extends entirely across the upper face, so that if the door should sag or move after the block is placed in position the rod would still engage with the recess.
Brepresents a casting, which is adapted to be attached to the knob-shank of an ordinary door lock or latch, and said casting is provided at its upper end with a perforation, B, of sufficient size to pass over the knob-shank,
upon which it is secured by a set-screw, b, which passes through a projecting collar, 0, formed integral with the casting B. The setscrew provides an effective means for securing the casting upon the knob-shank. The lower portion of the casting B diverges from the opening B, and is provided with lugs d d, which project therefrom and engage with the horizontal portion of the sliding bolt or rod 0. The sliding bolt or rod (3 has its upper portion bent at substantially right angles to its main portion, and the same is secured to the door, near its outer edge, by eyes 6 c,within which it slides. The rod 0, at its upper horizontal portion, D, is bent, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to provide inclined portions adjacent to the lugs d d, which project from the casting B, so that, with the collar 0, a place for the vertical play of the rod between the lock and body When the knob is turned, one of the projec-- tions d on the casting which is attached to the knob-shank is brought in contact with the end D of the sliding rod or bolt and raises the same, and when the door engages with the stop the rod will fall into the recess 2) in the block A and hold the door in an open position.
It will be seen from the foregoing that by simply turning the knob that the rod is released from the catch.
1. In a door-holder, through eyes e e, bent at right angles at the top, the horizontal portion D, secured to the knob-shank by means of the casting B, having setscrew b, and projecting pins 01 d, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a door-holder, the casting B, having at its lower portion pins (2 d, adapted to be secured to the knob-shank, in combination with the sliding rod attached to the door, and recessed stop A, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL N IG GLI.
