(Cl. 132-40) This invention relates to hair curling devices of the type which comprise a ygenerally cylindrical hair holding means with a plurality of radially outwardly projecting brush bristles. Hair-curling devices of this general type have not been wholly satisfactory due to the tendency of the brush bristles, which are generally comparatively stiff, to irritate the scalp of a-person on whom the hair curling device is used.

It is the general object of Ithe present invention to provide a hair curling device of the type mentioned and which includes la protective sheet of imperforate material adapted to be disposed between lthe curling device and the scalp of a person on whom the device is used, the scalp or other skin area being thus protected against irritation from the ends of the brush bristles incorporated in the curling device.

The drawing shows three embodiments of the invention and such embodiments will be described, but it will -be understood that various changes may be made from the constructions disclosed, and that the drawing and description are not to be `construed as dening or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims forming `a part of this specification being relied yupon for lthat purpose.

FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a hair curling device which forms a thirdembodiment of the present invention.

Referring particularly to FIGS. 3 and 4, it will be observed that a hair curling device 1t) therein comprises a hollow cylinder indicated `generally at 12 and a cylindrical brush indicated generally at 14. The cylinder 12 is open at its ends and hasV a perforate side wall preferably formed in two parts. 'A iirst part of the cylinder side wall comprises a helical spring 16 which may be formed of metal having uniformly spaced coils, except that the coils at Ithe ends are preferably abutting. The spring 16 is encased within and supports a netting 18 which may be for-med of line meta-l or plastic wire and which is shown as comprising a diamond mesh. That is, the netting 1S defines a plurality of diamond shaped openings or

From the foregoing it will be apparent that the cylindrical brush 14 can be assembled within the cylinder 12 so that end portions of the

20, 20 in the mesh 18. With hair wound about the cylinder, the projecting end portions `of the bristles will serve to secure the hair in a condition of uniform distribution along the length of the cylinder side wall. Thus, the projecting end portions of the

24, 24 serve a useful and necessary purpose; but, as stated, they may also engage and become a source of irritation to the scalp or other skin area of a person on whom the curling device is used.

In accordance with the present invention and in order that skin irritation may be avoided, a llexible protective sheet indicated generally a-t 26 is provided. The sheet 26 is imperforate and may lbe conveniently formed of a clear puncture resistant plastic. In further accord with the invention, the protective sheet 26 is attached to the cylinder 12 so as to be wrapped or folded over hair wound on the cylinder and disposed between the hair and the scalp or other skin -area of a person on whorri the hair curling device is lused. Thus, the sheet serves to protect ythe scalp or other skin area from irritation by the above-said bristle end portions.

As` shown, a means `for attaching the protective sheet 26 fto the cylinder 12 comprises an elongated axially or longitudinally extending connecting bar 28. The sheet 26 is generally rectangular in form and is folded along a line, preferably centrally located,` and parallel with one of its edges. The yconnecting bar 2S has its central portion disposed within the fold of the sheet 26 so as to attach the sheet to the cylinder 12 at its folded edge portion 30. End portions of the connecting bar 28 engage and extend generally radially inwardly around opposite edge portions of the side wall `oct the cylinder 12 andY n sheet portion at either side of the bar and sheet portion.

The cylinder may then be rotated to wind the hair on its side wall and the protective sheet 26 may, at the same time, be wrapped over the end portions of the hair in a manner illustrated in FIG. 2. Obviously, the direction of rotation of the cylinder 12 is determined by the placement of the hair ends adjacent the connecting Ibar 2S and the protective sheet 26.

With the protective sheet 26 wrapped or folded over end portions of hair wound on the cylinder 12 as illustrat/ed in FIG. 2, the said sheet may be disposed between the hair land the scalp or other skin area of a person on whom the curling device is used. In such position, the protective sheet prevents the aforementioned scalp or skin irritation. FIG. l shows several curling devices constructed in accordance with the invention in place on the head of a person whose hair is to be curled.

With the folded edge portion 30 of the protective sheet 26 tixedly attached to the cylinder 12 as described, it will be apparent that an operator is somewhat limited in the manner in which he may initially place the hair end portions on the cylinder 12. A curling device comprising a second embodiment 'of the invention Kand illustrated in FIG. 5 overcomes this limitation. Said device comprises a hollow cylinder 12a which includes a spring 16a and netting 13a and which may be identical with the cylinder l2. Similarly, a brush 14a having a core 22a 'and radially outwardly projecting bristles 24a may tbe identical with the -a'foredescribed brush i4. Protective sheet 26a, which may be identical with the sheet 26, has 'a central portion of `a. connecting bar 34 disposed within its folded edge portion 30a.

Preferably, `and as shown, the connecting lbar 34 is similar to the connecting bar 2S, but end portions 36 and 38 thereof are respectively pivotally and releasably connected adjacent opposite edge portions of the side wall of the cylinder 12a. A second axially extending bar 4@ is pivotally or hingedly connected at a left-hand end portion with the connecting bar 3 4 by means of a suitable pin 42. At its opposite or right-hand end portion, the bar 4G carries a small latching device d4 which engages and releasably holds the right-hand end portion 38 of the connecting bar 34. Said right-hand end portion 38 extends generally radially inwardly frorn the central portion of the connecting bar for engagement with the latching portion 44 of the bar 4G. A central portion of the bar 40 is disposed within the side Wal-l of the cylinder 12a and engages several bristles of the brush 14a. It is `found that said bristles 'provide suicient holding force for the said 'central portion of the bar itl and additional securing means is unnecessary.

Preferably, and as shown, the protective sheet 2da is connected with and movable with the connecting bar 34.

Such connection may be effected by means of heat seal-V ing along a line 456 adjacent 'the connecting bar. With the protective sheet connected to the bar 34, the sheet and bar can be swung in an axial plane about the pivot pin 42. The bar 34 and the protective sheet 26a kare shown in a broken line position at approximately 30 lfrom their operative position. Preferably, however, said bar and protective sheet are `adapted to be swung through at least 90 so as to clear the outer surface of the side wall of the cylinder 12a. Thus, the cylinder side well is Wholly unobstructed lfor the placement of hair thereon. Hair may be wound on `the side wall from any starting position and through any desired number of turns. Thereafter, the connecting bar 34 and the protective sheet 26a may be swung to their operative full line positions of FIG.. 5 and the protective sheet may then be wrapped over the hair and over the bristle end portions yas illustrated in FIG. 2.

` A third embodiment of the hair cur-ling device of the present inventionV is shown in FG. 6 and comprises a cylinder 12b iand a brush 14h which may be identical respectively with the cylinder 12 and brush i4. A protective sheet 46 is similar to the protective sheet 26, but preferably comprises only sa single layer of plastic material. The sheet 46 is not attached to the cylinder-along a line extending lengthwise of the cylinder as in FIGS. 1 to 5, but is instead attached along a part of one edge portion of the cylinder side wall.

More specifically, a portion 4S of the protective sheet 46 is yfolded generally radially inwardly around a part of the edge portion Sil of the cy-linder side Wall. As by stitching along a line 52, the folded portion of the sheet may be connected with a portion of the sheet overlying the side wall of the cylinder. Such stitching may of course be accomplished through the openings or perforations in the net of the -curling device.

In use, the protective sheet 46 may be disposed as shown in FIG. 6 over hair wound about the cylinder 12b.

` In winding hair on the cylinder, the protective sheet may be pulled back upon itself from the free end 54 in a generally yaxial direction toward the opposite end of the cylinder. This serves to clear the cylinder side wall for placement of the hair thereon.

The invention claimed is:

1. In a hair curling device, the combination of -a hollow cylinder with a perforate side wall about which hair can be wound, a cylindrical brush having a length and diameter respectively substantially equal to and larger than the corresponding cylinder dimensions, said brush being disposed vvithin said cylinder with outer end portions of its bristles projecting radially outwardly through said perforate side wall to engage hair wound therearound, a llexible generally rectangular protective sheet of imperforate material, and means for attaching one edge portion of said protective sheet to said cylinder so that the sheet can be folded over a portion of the hair wound on the cylinder and disposed between said hair portion and the scalp of a person on whom the curling device is used.

2. In ia .hair curling device, the combination of a hollow cylinder with a perforate `side wall about which hair can be fwound, :a cylindrical brush having a length and diameter respectively substantially equal to and larger than the corresponding cylinder dimensions, said brush being disposed Within said cylinder lwith outer end portions of its bristles projecting radially outwardly through said perforate side wall to engage hair wound therearound, a flexible [generally rectangulai protective sheet of imperforate material folded upon itself along a line parallel with one edge, `and an axially extending connecting bar having ia central portion disposed with-in the fold of said protective sheet and end portions secured at opposite edge portions of said cylinder side wall, said protective sheet being thus held so that it can be disposed in double thickness over a portion of the `hair wound on said cylinder side wall and Abetween said hair portion and the scalp of `a person on whom the curling device is used.

3; The combination in a hair curling device as set forth in claim 2 wherein said end portions of said connecting bar extend generally radially inwardly and toward each other :about land in engagement with said opposite edge portions of the cylinder side wall so as to be secured to said cylinder.

4. In la hair curl-ing device, the combination of la hollow cylinder Iwith a perforate side Wall about which hair can be wound, la cylindrical brush having a length and diameter respectively substantially equal to and larger than the corresponding cylinder dimensions, saidy brush -being disposed within saidl cylinder with outer end portions of its bristles projecting radially outwardly through said perforate side Wall to engage lrair wound therearound, a flexible generally rectangular protective sheet of imperforate material folded upon itself along a line parallel with one edge, tand means Wholly separable yfrom said cylinder for attaching the folded edge portion of said protective sheet to said cylinder side Wall so that the sheet can 'be' folded over a portion of the hair wound on said side wall and disposed between said hair portion yand the scalp of ia person onwhom the curling device is used, said last-mentioned means comprising an axially extending connecting bar with a central portion disposed Within the fold of said protective sheet and -a latch member adapted to pivotally hold one end portion of said bar adjacent one4 edge portion of said cy'lnider side wall and further adapted to releasably hold an lopposite end port-ion iof said bar adjacent the opposite edge portion of `said cylinder side wall.

5. The combination in `a hair curling device yas set forth in claim 4 wherein said protective sheet is connected together adjacent said connecting barso as to be attached thereto and movable therewith.

6. The combination in a hair curling device as set forth in claim 5 wherein said latch member comprises a second axially extending bar removably disposed within and adjacent said cylinder side Wall, and wherein said pivotal connection between said bar and said connecting bar is such that the latter and -said protective sheet can be vswung clear of the outer surface of said cylinder side wall and through at least J 1in Lan axial direction.

7. Ina hair curling device, the combination of a hollow cylinder with a perforatc 4side Iwall about Which hair can -be wound, :a cylindrical brush having a length and diameter respectively substantially equal to and larger than the J corresponding cylinder dimensions, `said brush being disposed Within said cylinder lwith outer end portions of its bristles projecting radially outwardly through said perforate side Wall to engage hair Wound therearound, la flexible generally rectangular protective sheet of imperforate material, =and means for zattaching one edge portion of said sheet along la. part of one edge portion of s-aid cylinder iside Wall so that 4the sheet can be folded over A' 1 portion of the hair wound on the cylinder and disposed Ibetween said hair portion fand the scalp of a person on whom the cunling device is used.

8. The combination in ya. hair curling device vas set forth in claim 7 wherein said one edge portion of said protective sheet is folded inwardly around said part of said one edge portion of the cylinder side wall, and wherein said folded portion of the )sheet is stitched ,through `side wall perforations to a portion of the sheet overlying said cylinder side Wall.

Claims

1. IN A HAIR CURLING DEVICE, THE COMBINATION OF A HOLLOW CYLINDER WITH A PERFORATE SIDE WALL ABOUT WHICH HAIR CAN BE WOUND, A CYLINDRICAL BRUSH HAVING A LENGTH AND DIAMETER RESPECTIVELY SUBSTANTIALLY EQUAL TO AND LARGER THAN THE CORRSPONDING CYLINDER DIMENSIONS, SAID BRUSH BEING DISPOSED WITHIN SAID CYLINDER WITH OUTER END PORTIONS OF ITS BRISTLES PROJECTING RADIALLY OUTWARDLY THROUGH SAID PERFORATE SIDE WALL TO ENGAE HAIR WOUND THEREAROUND, A FLEXIBLE GENERALLY RECTANGULAR PROTECTIVE SHEET OF IMPERFORATE MATERIAL,AND MEAND FOR ATTACHING ONE EDGE PORTION OF SAID PROTECTIVE SHEET TO SAID CYLINDER SO THAT THE SHEET CAN BE FOLDED OVER A PORTION OF THE HAIR WOUND ON THE CYLINDER AND DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID HAIR PORTION AND THE SCALP OF A PERSON ON WHIN THE CURLING DEVICE IS USED.
