(Cl. 132-40) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a device for styling hair and, more particularly, to hair curlers of the type which are used to form a wave or curl.

Hair curlers that are in general use have many disadvantages. They are cumbersome to use and require hairpins or clamps to hold the curler in place next to the scalp. Because they do not hold the curler close to the scalp without the aid of hairpins or clamps, a complete wave or curl is not formed. With respect to the latter, curlers inevitably unwind because of improper location of the pins or clamps. Since the curler and curler retaining means are separate elements, one is constantly being lost or misplaced whereby the utility of the other is lost. Under these circumstances hair curling technique is hindered and complete waving or curling is not possible.

It is therefore an objective of my invention to eliminate the disadvantages of the prior art curlers and to provide an improved curler that is relatively easy to handle and manipulate and efiectively curls or waves the hair.

Another object is to provide an improved hair curler about which hair may be wound, held firmly on the curler and close to the scalp thereby assuring maximum curling or waving of the hair.

It is also an object of my invention to provide a hair curler which will be held firmly in any relative position with respect to hair extending from the scalp and the hair wound on the curler.

Still another object of my invention is to provide a hair retaining means which has projections to engage the hair on the curler and the hair extending directly from the scalp and which has means for mounting the hair retaining means to provide universal movement thereof.

Other objects and advantages of my invention include provision of a hair curler of unitary construction that is inexpensive to manufacture and assemble, simple in design, durable, light-weight and free from dismembering of curler parts.

In presenting the detailed description of my invention, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that my invention may include many forms of construction and that the illustrative embodiment described herein is merely exemplary of a form my invention may take. It should be further understood that my proposed hair curling means may form an integral part of the hair curler as supplied commercially as a unit, or may be supplied individually for subsequent attachment to existing curler constructions. I

It is contemplated in practicing my invention to provide a cylindrical body member about which hair may be wound and to provide a hair retaining means adjacent at least one end of the cylindrical body member and 'ice which is mounted to engage the hair on the body member and the hair adjacent the scalp. The hair retaining means may be any engaging device that will engage the hair on the curler and the hair extending directly from the scalp so that the curler is maintained in substantially the same position throughout its use and holds the curler close to the scalp to provide a curl or wave that embodies substantially the total length of the hair being waved or curled.

Thus, the hair retaining means may be mounted in many ways to obtain universal movement thereof, several examples being a ball and socket joint, a movable bar assembly or the hair retaining means may include a ring mounted on the elongated cylindrical body member. This ring serves to mount a clip or engaging device having spaced projections or fingers in staggered relationship relative to each other. The clip and ring have cooperating interengaging surfaces which provide for relatively complete universal movement of the clip or engaging device. The projections or fingers serve to engage both the hair wound on the body of the curler and the hair extending directly from the scalp.

The ring or other mounting means may be manufactured separately to be inserted into the bore of the cylindrical body member or it may be manufactured to be incorporated as a single unit within the bore of the cylindrical body member.

My invention also contemplates the use of a clip or engaging device having spaced projections in staggered relationship relative to each other. The projections or fingers engage the hair wound on the body of the curler and also the hair extending directly from the scalp. The fingers are designed in staggered relationship to each other to hold the curler in a fixed position, securely enabling the curler to be held snugly against the scalp or at any selected distance therefrom.

For a full understanding of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, the elongated cylindrical body member 10 includes a helicoid or spring section 12 covered by a mesh net covering 14. This net may also include radially extending fibers or bristles for engaging the hair wound thereon. The net covering 14 forms a substantially cylindrical body members of curlers in general use. This type of con struction provides air spaces which permit the drying of hair. This is a major consideration in the design of any curler.

As an exemplary means for so mounting the hair retaining means, I may provide a ring. Accordingly, inserted adjacent the ends of the body member 10 are rings 16 mounted in the bore of body member 10 so that rings 16 substantially engage body member 10 in a fixed relationship.

The hair retaining means are mounted to interengage the surfaces of grooves 18 provided in rings 16. A hair retaining means 20 is preferably mounted on the body member 10. Although it is possible to utilize a single hair retaining means, it is preferred that a pair of hair retaining means be provided at each end of the body memher to assure symmetrical curling and to prevent one side of the curl falling with respect to the other.

If desired, the ring may be secured to the body member in any one of many ways. It should be understood that this ring, as well as the hair retaining means, may be a separate attachment to be assembled on existing cylindrical body members or be manufactured as an integral part thereof. In fact, the present invention contemplates any curler construction in which the hair retaining means is capable of universal movement and is not limited to the illustrated rings.

The hair retaining means or clip 20 is provided with a pair of pivotal members 22 which engage the groove 18 of ring 16. The clip 20 is free to move radially and circumferentially with respect to the body member 16. It will be observed that the hair retaining means or clip 20 is provided with a pair of fingers 24 and 26 in staggered relationship to each other. The fingers 24 and 26 provide a means for holding the hair wound about the body member in a substantially fixed position. In addition, the spaced projections or fingers serve to hold the curler in position adjacent the scalp by engaging the hair extending directly from the scalp which is not wound about the curler, thus providing maximum curling of all the hair.

The hair retaining means is mounted for circumferential movement with respect to the body member 10 so that notwithstanding the particular orientation of the body member 10 with respect to the hair, they may be rotated to engage the hair on the curler and the hair extending from the scalp When using my curler, a section of hair is selected and is wound about the cylindrical body member 10 with the hair retaining means or clip 20 extending radially from the body member 10, as shown in phantom in FIG. 2. The hair may be wound in a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction, as shown in FIGS. 3a and 3b. When the hair has been wound about the body member 10, the hair retaining means or clips 20 are rotated circumferentially until they are in substantially parallel relationship to the body member 10 and to the scalp. The clips 26 are now in a position such that they engage the hair wound about the body member and the hair extending directly from the scalp. The clips or hair retaining means 24 are then placed in locked position, as shown in FIG. 2.

The material that may be used to produce my curler may be one of many. It may be made from a light metal, such as aluminum, or any of the common metals used in the art. It may be made from a suitable plastic material; however, the plastic used for the rings should be substantially rigid, while the hair retaining means may or may not be of rigid plastic. Also, the rings and body member may be made of plastic, and the clip could be made of metal.

Thus, it should be apparent that a hair curling device provided whereby the wound hair is firmly held in place without danger of unwinding. The symmetry of the formed curl or Wave is assured because of cooperating hair curling means. A properly formed curl or wave will always be formed, notwithstanding the location of the curl or wave with respect to the scalp. Existing hair curling cylindrical bodies need not be revised or modified because my invention can be supplied as an attachment thereto. In this connection my invention contemplates a minimum number of parts, each relatively simple to manufacture to provide a unit or universally operable hair curling device or hair curler. I have eifectively eliminated any concern about the curler parts becoming disassociated from one another by interconnecting the hair retaining means with the cylindrical body.

It should be understood that if only the ends of strands of hair are to be curled, my hair retaining means are equal- 1y effective. The hair retaining means under these circumstances would not only engage the hair on the curlerbut; also the hair extending directly from the scalp.

Hair curlers of the type described herein may be used in the home by those desirous of curling or waving their own hair or by professional hair stylists at their places of business.

The openings at the end and throughout the body member 10 provide a means by which air may circulate naturally, or, after curling or waving the hair with water or waving solutions, the air may be circulated by blowers 0r dryers to facilitate rapid drying of the hair.

*It will be appreciated that modifications may be made in the illustrative embodiment of my invention, that changes in design and construction and the substitution of parts are within the scope of my invention. The drawings shown and described above are merely for illustration, without intending to limit the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. A hair curling device for producing a uniform curl at any particular orientation with respect to the scalp and at any distance therefrom comprising a body member about which hair is wound, said body member being cylindrical in shape and having a bore disposed therethrough and hair retaining means rotatively and pivotally secured within the bore to at least one end of said body member, said hair retaining means having fingers in staggered relationship relative to each other and conforming to the shape of the body member, whereby a number of the fingers engage the hair in a staggered basis as wound on the body member and the remaining fingers engage the hair extending directly from the scalp.

2. The invention according to claim 1, the body member having at least one ring secured within the bore of said body member at one of the extremities, and said hair retaining means rotatively and pivotally secured within said ring.

3. The invention according to claim 2, the rings having an interior channel to receive the hair retaining means.

4. The invention according to claim 2, a groove formed in the interior circumference of the ring, the hair retaining means including pivotal members rotatively received within the groove of the ring, providing pivotal movement of the hair retaining means toward and away from the body member.
