J. R. BODELL.
LADDER BBAGKET. No. 309,435. Patented Dec. 16, 1884.
W d" QM WITNESSES: INVENTUR fiy @%%ii fi% ill Arnr
JOHN It. BODELL, OF NEW SALEM,
OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO 1?. BENT AND HOBART AYRES, OF CLINTON, IOWA.
LADDER BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,435, dated December 16, 1884. Application filed September 2-2, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, JOHN R. BODELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Salem, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder- Brackets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of vention, which will-enable others skilled in( l i this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved ladder-bracket,showing the same folded. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the same applied to a ladder in position I for operation, and Fig. 3 is a side view showing the device applied to a ladder for operap tion in a different position.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improved bracket or supporting device adapted to be applied or attached adjustably to any ordinary ladder; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general eiiiciency.
\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the body of my improved bracket or support, which consists of a board or platform of suitable dimensions, one end of which, which I shall term the front end, is provided permanently with a pair of strong hooks, B B, adapted to hook over any one of the rungs of an ordinary ladder. The rear end of the board or platform A is provided with a transverse rod, 0, upon the ends of which are hinged or pivoted a pair of legs, D D, adapted to be folded closely against the sides of the platform A, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The said legs are connected near their outer or free ends by a brace, E, secured to their under sides. Additional such braces may be used when desired; but I do not deem them necessary. The extreme outer ends of the legs D D are provided with hooks F F, pivoted to their outer sides and adapted to hook over any ordinary ladder-rung.
The operation and advantages of this invention Will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
The device may be applied to the under or inner side of a ladder by adjusting the hooks B of the platform A upon any desired one of the rungs, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and then swinging the legs I) D up and hooking them to any one of the upper rungs, which will bring the, platform A into an approximately horizontal position. To the outer or upper side of the ladder the device may be applied, in substantially the same manner, by hooking the legs to one of the rungs below the one to which the platform is connected, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When not in use, the device may be folded, as shown in Fig. 1, into a compass the bulk of which only exceeds that of the platform itself by the width of the legs.
The utility of this device for a variety of purposes will be at once apparent. It is exceedingly simple, easily manipulated or adjusted, and may be constructed at a trifling expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In an adjustable and reversible ladder bracket or support, the combination of a board or platform provided at one end witha pair of permanent hooks and at the other end with a transverse rod, a pair of legs hinged or pivoted upon the ends of, said rod adjoining the sides of the platform, a brace secured to the under sides of and connecting the said legs, and hooks pivoted to the outer sides of said legs at their outer ends, whereby said hooks are adapted to engage the ladder-rungs when the device is reversed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
: JOHN BODELL.
