PATENT BALE-TIE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,569, dated September 23, 1884.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OWEN P. BROWN and WILLIAM S. DEIDRIOH, both of Smithville, in the county of Lee and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved tie for cotton-bales, &c., which tie can be closed or opened very readily.

The invention consists in a strip provided with a loop at each end, of a hook pivoted to the strip near one end and provided on its free end with a lug or prong for looking it in place.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of a bale provided with our improved bale-tie. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the locking part of the tie, parts being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same.

The metal strip A has its ends bent over to form loops B and G. A hook, D, is pivoted to the strip or tie A near one end by a pin,E, passed through a slot, F, in the piv= oted end of the hook, the said slot being so arranged that when that end of the slot farthest from the free end of the hook rests on the pin E, the cross-piece. D of the hook will rest on the end piece of the loop 13, as shown in Fig. 2. The cross-piece D of the hook is provided at its end with a downwardly-pro- The strip or tie A is drawn taut, and the part D of the hook is passed through the loop 0 at the opposite end of the tie and then through the loop B on the same end to which the hook is pivoted. The two ends of the tie or band are pulled in opposite directions, and thus the opposite edges of the part D are pressed against the end pieces of the loops B O, the lug or prong G resting against the outer edge of the end of the loop B and thus locking the tie. If the tie is to be removed, the ends must be moved toward each otherthat is, the end part of the loop B must be moved below the free end of the prong G, the hook must be moved upward so that the endof the prong G can clear the end of the loop B, and then the hook D is swung out of the loops B and 0, whereby the tie is opened.

The tie can be opened or closed easily and rapidly, and is not damaged andtneed not be bent or twisted to lock it.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- is

' 1. A bale-tie formed of a strip having a loop at each end and a hook pivoted. at'one end, which hook is provided on its free end with 2. lug, prong, or projection for locking it in place, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. A bale-tie formed of a strip, A, having the loops B and C at the ends, the hook D, having. the slot F at the pivoted end and the lug or prong G at the free end, and of the pin E, passed through the slot F, substantially as herein shown and described.
