Description
J. W. BETTY.- Bale-Tie.
No. 196,699. Patented Oct. 30, 1877..
N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER, WASI'IXNGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH W. PETTY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,699, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WASHINGTON PETTY, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my bale-tie.
My invention relates to ties for cotton or other bales; and it consists in the construction of a loop formed on one end of the hoop or band iron, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the strap-iron forming theband around the bale. One end of the strap A is twisted, as shown, forming a round bar, B, standing nearly at right angles outward from the edge of the strap, and the extreme end O of the strap is carried inward and riveted to the body of the strap at a, the whole forming a triangular loop, D, at the end of the strap, as shown.
When the strap is passed around the bale, the other end thereof is fastened in the loop D in any of the known and usual ways.
I am aware that a detachable or separate triangular loop riveted to a bale-tie band, per .96, is not new; and I am also aware that a bale-tie provided with a loop formed by bending the hoop twice at right angles with itself, and forming the outer part thereof in a plane perpendicular to the hoop, has heretofore been employed, and I therefore lay no claim to such inventions.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bale-tie having one of its ends twisted to form a round bar, B, standing at or nearly at right angles outward from the edge of the band, and the extreme end of said band car ried inwardly and riveted to the body of the band, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. W. PETIY.
Witnesses OHAs. G. AUDRY, Gno. GRIMA.
