UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
' FRANKLIN l?. JACKSON AND JOHN W. SKINNER, OF QUINOY, ILLINOIS; SAID SKINNER ASSIGNOR TO LAWRENCE E. EMMONS, OF SAME PLACE.
TOBACCO-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,337, dated July 22, 1884.
Application tiled May 29. 1884. (No model.) Y
T all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, FRANKLIN P. J .lexsoN and .IoHN W. SKINNER, both of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Presses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, lform- Io ing a part of this specication, and to the gures and letters of reference marked thereon.
Our present invention has reference to improvements in the construction of the press boxes or shapes used in forming and pressing plug and smoking tobacco; and it consists in the novel construction andcombination of the several parts or members forming said shapes, whereby the pockets or receptacles for the tobacco may be adjusted and the parts rendered 2o interchangeable, all as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.,
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of our improved press box or shape with follower raised out of position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the press-box.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modiiication of our invention. Fig. 4t is a view of the end piece B.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The metal plate A, forming the bottom of the press box or form, is provided with axed end piece, B, and two vertical guidingbrackets, C. Both the end pieces B and brackets C are provided with elongated slots or open- 35.ings b c, for the reception of pins or screws fastened to the ends ofthe movable side pieces D. The slots in the end piece B may, if desired, be closed at the end by plates b. The
inner or contiguous faces of the side pieces D 4o are made parallel, and formed with vertical slots or grooves d, for the reception of the removable division-plates or partitions E, and the outer faces of the side pieces taper or ineline toward the end piece B, and are provided with the guiding-strips d'. The press box or shape thus constructed is received within a frame formed upon or attached to the base-plate or press-table F. This frame is composed of the base-plate F, end piece F',
and side pieces F2, the inner faces of the latter 5o being inclined at the same angle as the outer faces of the side pieces D of the press-box, and also provided with longitudinal slots, forming ways for the strips d.
In using our improved press box or shape it is placed in position upon the base-plate F and withdrawn from between the side pieces F2, the division-plates or partitions E being removed. The workman then takes the material to be pressed, and, after separating or 6o forming a mass of the proper size, weight, or quality, he pushes it into place against the end pieces B and inserts a division-plate in the first pair of slots. The same operation is repeated until each receptacle is in turn iilled 6 5 and the division-plates inserted. VVhen the press-box proper is thus fully charged, it is pushed forward in between the side pieces F2, and by reason of the inclined or wedge shape of these pieces the side pieces D are forced 7o together, thus conning the partitions firmly in place, the grooves being of sufficient depth to permit the proper degree of movement. The upper plate, II, with its plungers I, of proper size and form to fit the several compart- 7 5 ments contained in the press box, is then' brought down and the whole submitted to the action of the press. y y
As will be obvious, the press-box above described possesses numerous advantages both as regards its construction and manipulation. By employing side bars of different widths or with the vertical slots for the reception of the partition-plates at different distances apart, it may be readily adapted to receive and press longer or wider lumps or plugs. Moreover, by its use we are enabled to accurately and expeditiously form or produce lumps or plugs of exact weight and size with stra-ight sides and square corners.
Vhen desired, two or more press boxes or shapes may be adapted to the same base-plate or press-table, and to accomplish this it is only necessary to insert between the side pieces F2 a double-inclined or wedge piece, F3, as shown in Fig. 3, the base or larger end of the wedge resting against the end piece F.
Having thus described my invention, what having inclined faces, the movable plate carrying the inclined and grooved side pieces, and removable partitions, substantially as described.
4. In combination with the iixed inclined side pieces, the removable wedge-piece, and the press-boxes, each composed of a plate, two removable side pieces, inclined and grooved as described, and the removable partitions, as and for the purpose set forth.
FRANKLIN' I. JACKSON. JOHN XV. SKINNER.
