Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENNETT L. SMEDLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PILL-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,849, dated April 29, 1879; application filed February 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNETT L. SMEDLEY, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Making Pills, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a detached portion, and Fig. 4 is an end view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a support, with sockets for the mold, and a lever, both arranged longitudinally, whereby the pill or powder may first be compressed and then ejected by the said lever.
It also consists of a support formed with a socket to receive the mold during the compressing operation, and a socket to sustain the mold during the discharge of the pill, and provided with a receptacle for the pills, &c., whereby the latter are most conveniently accessible.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a block of wood or other material forming a base, to one end of which is secured a standard, a, having pivoted to it a lever, B, which extends longitudinally, or in the direction of the length of the base.
0 represents the mold, consisting of a barrel, plunger, and bottom die, all of which have been in common use; and D represents a support for the mold, which is preferably formed of cast metal, so as to possess the necessary strength, and consists of a solid portion, 1), wlth a socket, c, and a top portion, d,.formed with depending side walls 0, and having a socket, f, and an opening, f, which leads to the space formed by the walls 0, into which space is fitted a drawer, E, the portions band 01 being at opposite ends of the support.
The supportD is secured to the base A, and extends in the longitudinal direction thereof, similar to the lever B.
The operation isas follows: The mold O, with the plunger removed, is placed in the socket c, the powder is introduced into the barrel, and the plunger is then restored, as is I well known. The plunger is in such position that it may be depressed by the lever, whereby the powder will be conveniently and powerfully compressed, as is evident. The lever is now raised and the mold lifted from the socket 0, while the bottom die remains therein, the faces of the dies being highly polished or somewhat greased, to prevent sticking of the pill thereto. The mold is then placed in the socket f and the lever depressed, whereby the pill is forced from the barrel of the mold and injected through the opening f into the drawer E, when employed, or the space formed by the walls 0. The mold is then returned to the socket c.
It will be seen that the same lever both compresses the powder and discharges the pill, and is rapid and powerful in execution.
It will also be seen that the pills are not scattered, but are collected within easy access at the top of the base, and. that a convenient hand apparatus is produced.
I am aware that pill-machines have been variously constructed, and that it is not new to employ detachable molds and barrels there- In.
I am also aware that the bases or supports of some pill-machines and apparatus have been formed with openings leading to the bottoms and sides thereof for removal of the pills; wherefore I disclaim such features.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The base A, in combination with the double socket-support D, secured to the top of the same, and the lever B, hinged at one end thereof, both support and lever extending in the longitudinal direction of the base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The support D, consistingof the portion b, with socket c, and top portion d, having depending side walls 0, socket f, and opening f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
BENNETT L. SMEDLEY.
