UNITED STATES PATENT rEicE.
JOHN DALL, OF NEI/V YORK, N. Y.
COAL-SUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,233, dated March 18, 1884.
Application 'tiled Janunry25,18:'4. (No model) To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN DALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the State oi' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Goal-Brinks, of which the following is a specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the eonstruetionlof a hunk or receptacle for coals, to facilitate the unloading of coal barges or ships, and prevent the delay occasioned in the waiting for the coal-carts to carry the coal away.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a front view, and Fig. II a lside view, of my improved coal-hunk. Fig. III is e top view of part of the bunk.
Similar letters represent similar parts in all the figures.
A is a receptacle, the sides and hack of which are made slanting toward the front, in which a large opening is made, closed by a suitable door, B, hinged at its upper edge to the front of the receptacle, opening outward. The door is fastened to the spindle a, on the end of which a crank, c, is attached, connected through a rod, b, to a lever, D, through which the door B is operated, so as to close or open when desired. To the lever D a spring,
S, is attached, acting in such a manner on said lever as t-o close the door B. The upper part ot' the lever D works in a guide-frame, J, attached to the side of the hunk A, provided at its inside with recesses n 11,-one at each end-into which the lever D is moved or sprung et each end of its movement, to hold said lever, and consequently the door B, in its relative position-viz., either open or closed.
Vhile unloading a coal-barge the coal is hoisted out of the harge withv buckets, and generally emptied directly into the cart, to be 4o oarted away. In this operation considerable delay is occasioned during the moving away of one cart and the hacking up of the next cart. By-the employment of my improved coal hunk or bunks the unloading can proceed even when no cart should be ready to receive the coal, and the cart moved to one of the hunks, to he lled almost instantaneouslmand whereby much time, and consequently expense, will he saved.
These hunks are'very light, and can readily he moved into any desired place. These hunks, if desired, may he divided in the center by a partition, and supplied, in that case, with a door for each partition.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM
A receptacle, A, the sides and hack of which are made slanting toward the front, closed by a hinged door, B, in combination with crank e, rod b, lever D, spring S, and guide-frame J, provided with recesses n u', arranged to op crate in the manner and for the purpose suhstantially as described.
