DUMPING OAR.
No. 254,182. Patented Feb. 28,1882.
Am /Z, jw'mim lamu'eifilme ezer lazy ' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL R. WHEELER, OF DEXTER, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. H. KRAUSE, OF SAME PLACE.
DUMPlNG-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.254,182, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed December 28, 1881. (No model.)
all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. WHEELER, Y
of Dexter, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Dumping-(Jars, ofwhich the following is a specification. 4 I
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of cars especially designed for handling grain in elevators or grain store-houses; and the invention consists ill-the peculiar construction, arrangement, and various combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved dumping-car. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, A represents a suitable bed or body, which is designed to be mounted upon a suitable truck; but said truck forming no part of my invention, I do not deem it necessary to illustrate or describe the same in this connection. One side of this body or base A is cut away, forming the beveled edgesa.
13 represents a suitable box, which is pivotally secured in the upperportion of the section A, and is provided with a spring-catch, 0, upon its rear, which projects downward and engages with a stop, I), projecting from the rear wall of the body A, to secure and retain the box B in its level or horizontal position. The front of this box B is provided with agate, D, hinged thereto at its upper edge, while its lower edge is kept or retained in its closed position by means of the latches E, which are pivotally v secured to proper hangers projecting downward from the bottom of the box B, or in any other suitable manner which will cause the said latches to engage with the lower edge of the gateD when it is in its closed position, said latches being operated by springs or by weightin gthe inner ends thereof, so that they will positively engage by gravity. Beneath the inner ends of these latches E, and laterally across the base A, upon the beveled side thereof, I secure a bar, F.
G is a rock-shaft, properly jonrnaled or secured in suitable bearings atthe rear of the base A, anda-rranged in such a manner that said shaft maybe partially turned, so as to cause its crank d to push the footof the spring (1 outward and disengage the same from its stop lg.
, In practice we'will suppose the device hereinabove described to be mounted upon a suitable truck designed to run upon proper tracks placed in a grain store-house, and wherein the grain is to be delivered into bins. This device, with its truck,is loaded or filled with grain from the farmers wagon or from an elevator, and it is then run up in front of the bin which is to receive the grain, at which point the crankshaft is turned, so that the spring is released from its engagement with its stop, and the car or the body B is then tipped toward the bin, rocking on its journal, and in its descent the inner ends of'the latches E impinge against the rod F, which disengages said latches from their engagement with the lower edge of the gate, and allows the weight of the grain to throw said gate open and discharge into the bin. After it is emptied the body B is then returned to its original position, when it is again ready to receive another load.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dumping-ear, a base having horizontal and inclined bearing-surfacesfor the. body in its respective positions of rest and dump,.co1 nbined with said body, having a hinged dumpin gdoor, means for automatically opening and lockin g said door, and means for automatically securing the body. in a horizontal position, as specified. w
2. The combination of the base A at, having stops F and notch b, with the body B, door D, weighted catch E, the spring-catch G, and crank-bar G d, all constructed, arranged, and adapted to serveas and for the purposes specified.
