Description
Aug. 9, 1960 s. SLOBODA ETAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR VISE JAWS Filed 001;. 9, 1958 INVENTORS GUSTAV SLOBODA CARL WEISSENSTEIN ATTORNEY United States Patent 0 ARRANGEMENTS FOR VISE JAWS Gustav Slohoda, 3002 Broadway, Astoria, N.Y., and Carl Weissenstein, 63-61 99th St., Forest Hills 74, NY.
Filed Oct. 9, 1958, Ser. No. 766,290
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-38) The present invention relates to arrangements for vise jaws in general and in particular to such attachments which are formed substantially complementary to the shape of the jaws.
It has been recognized before that it is advantageous to provide the work-gripping surfaces of the vise jaws with a material that is softer than the material normally applied for such vise jaws. This has been done in the past primarily for the purpose of preventing marring of an article that is to be gripped by these jaws.
Several expedients have been proposed before which amounted to covering devices for the face plates of the vise jaws. Yet it has been found that the known covering devices did not provide proper operation or they have been rendered commercially unfeasible due to their complicated, and accordingly expensive, construction. In addition the known devices were also incapable of accurately holding the work piece that is to be gripped between the vise jaws.
It is one object of the present invention to provide attachments for vise jaws, wherein each of said attachments comprises substantially a hollow body which is formed complementary to the conventional shape of the vise jaws and which may be equipped-with a dividing plate in order to permit of use of the attachments for different sizes of vise jaws.
With this and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top perspective view of a vise incorporating the arrangements for the vise jaws;
Fig. 2 is a perspective front elevation of an attachment member;
Fig. 3 is a perspective rear view of said attachment;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective rear view of said attachment;
Fig. 5 is a section along the lines 5-5 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a second embodiment of securing means for the attachment.
Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to Figs. 1 to 5, a conventional work holder 1, such as a vise, is provided which includes a slide 2, a fixed jaw 3, and a movable jaw 4. An operating handle 5 is also arranged for moving the jaw 4. The jaws 3 and 4 are usually made of metal and each of the jaws is provided with opposing faces. 7
The present invention is concerned with an attachment which is adapted to be mounted over the opposing end portions of the jaws 3 and 4. The attachment comprises a hollow rectangular body 6 which is equipped with a plurality of grooves 7 disposed on its front face 8 which engages the work piece 9to be gripped. The body 6 is made of rubber, plastic, soft metal, or any other suitable material. The chamber 10 defined by the hollow body 6 is of a size and of a shape complementary to the outer configuration of the end portions of the respective jaws 3 and 4, so that upon mounting the attachment on said end portions ofthe jaws 3 and 4,a tight fit of the attachment on the end portions may be readily obtained.
2,948,172 Patented Aug. 9, 1960 "ice While such mounting according to which the attachment engages the end portions of the jaws along five faces thereof will suflice to retain the attachment on said end portions, without any additional securing means, it is preferable to provide additional securing means for the attachment for particular working operations.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 5, one embodiment of the securing means is clearly disclosed, which comprises magnetic pieces inserted into the attachment and in particular into proper recesses 11 in which the magnets 12 are received in such a manner that the inner faces of the magnets 12 are disposed flush with the inner top and bottom faces, respectively, of the hollow body 6. The magnets 12 are adapted to be retained by magnetic force on the top and bottom faces, respectively, of the end portion of the respective vises 3 and 4 and, thereby, retain the attachments in their mounted position.
Referring now to Fig. 6, a second embodiment of securing means is provided, which resides in a helical spring 13 the ends of which are secured to the rear end faces of the body 6 and disposed around the slide 2.
It is an additional feature of the present invention to provide means for applying a single size attachment to different sizes of work holders. As clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 slots 14 are arranged in the opposite faces of the body 6 and extending from the rear face of the attachment towards its front face, which slots 14 are provided to receive metal plates 15 to be inserted into the slots, in order to reduce the length of the body 6, and, thereby, of the chamber defined in the hollow body 6. The slots are disposed apart from the lateral faces of the body 6 at such a distance that by inserting the metal plate 15 into one of the slots or by removing the metal plate 15 the chamber in he body 6 corresponds with the respective sizes of conventional jaws.
While we have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention beingdeterrnined by the objects and the claim.
We claimi An attachment for vise jaws comprising a hollow body of resilient material defining a chamber of a configuration complementary to the'outer configuration of said vise jaws, said chamber having inner top and bottom faces, lateral faces and an inner front face, all said faces being integrally connected with an adjacent one of said faces and being adapted to engage the corresponding outer faces of said vise jaws, and means provided on said vise jaws for retaining said hollow body on said vise jaws, said inner top and bottom faces having oppositely disposed slots extending from the rear of the respective top and bottom faces towards the front wall of said hollow body, and at least one dividing plate inserted into said oppositely disposed slots in order to permit of use of the same hollow body for different sizes of said vise jaws.
