To all whom it may concern,.-

Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. WHI'IING,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Erasers, of which the following is a specification,

The object of my invention is to provide a convenientdevice for cleaning ordinary schoolslates and other like surfaces.

The invention consists in securing a piece of sponge or other absorbent material to a suitable handle, and in fitting to such handle a water-tight cup in which additional absorbent material is contained. A second sponge, or

a mass of other suitable material, may lbe se-l embodying my invention, the parts beingseparated for use. The dotted lines show the position of the cup when in place, so that the implement may be carried. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing an eraser with its parts together, and having a second sponge secured to the top of the handle for drying the slate.

The absorbent mass withinV by means of rubber, cement, shellac, or in any oth er convenient manner. A somewhat smaller A sponge, h, or other equivalent material,may be aflixed to the tip of theknob b for drying the slate. A cup, B, of metal, hard rubber, or other suitable material ,is fitted over the circular portion c of the handle A in such a manner that it may be readily removed and replaced as desired. In thebottom of this cup is placed asponge, y. This sponge is designed to be moistened by pouring'a sufficientv quantity of water into thecup. When the sponge g has been thus moistened, the cup B is-placed upon the handle A, and the sponge f becomes sufficiently moist by contact with the sponge g, so that it is ready for use at any time.

Any suitable absorbent material--such as cloth or` felt-may be employed in lieu of the sponge f, and for some purposes it will be found convenient to substitute a brush. In like manner the sponge g may be replaced by any'soft absorbent material without departing from the principle of my invention.

I claim as my invention- Y 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore setforth,r of a handle, a mass of absorbent material attached thereto, a cup into which said handle is adapted to fit tightly, and a second mass of absorbent material contained within said cup.

2. As an article of manufacture, a slateeraser consisting of a han'dle, a drying-sponge -attached to one end of the same, a moisteningsponge attached to the other end ofthe same, and a cup inclosing the last-named sponge.
