CHARLEST. FALK United States Patent Ofice Patented June 7, 1960 This invention relates to removable hinged covers for containers, such as metal drums, commonly used as waste or trash containers. The chief object of the invention is to supply a hinged cover to guard against the entry of rodents, spontaneous combustion of the drum contents, and to preserve a sightly appearance.

Another object is to provide a cover which may be 1 -iattached to any drum without modification or mutilation of the drum and can be quickly, easily and entirely re- 4 moved from the drum when its contents is to be emptied so that the hinged cover will not interfere with such operation. It has been found that when drums with permanent hinged covers are emptied byv trash pick-up men, in a very short time the cover and its hinge are mutilated or bent in the emptying operation to such a degree as to interfere with the proper operation of the cover.

A further object of the invention is to provide the hinged removable cover with stops so that the degree of opening movement is limited to insure that the cover will gravitate closed after each opening operation.

With the general objects named in view and others as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain new and useful features of construction and organization of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in'which:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a drum and cover embodying the invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmental side elevation of the drum and cover shown in Figure 1, partially broken away to illustrate the hinge construction.

Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the hinge.

In the said drawing, where like reference characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, 1 illustrates a drum and adapted to cover the open end thereof is a disk cover 2 which is preferably formed with an outwardly flaring peripheral flange 3 terminating in an edge head 4. The flange and bead provide an operating handle for the manipulation of the cover.

Extending integrally from the cover as by being welded or riveted thereto is a strap hinge comprising an inclined portion 5, an ofiset portion 6 overlying the bead, and a downwardly extending section 7 perpendicular to the plane of the disk 2. The end of section 7 is bent-outwardly to form a flange 8 which is provided with downtumed hinge ears 9 at its opposite ends as shown. Adapted to be received between the hinge ears 9 and secured thereto by a hinge pin 10 are hinge ears formed on the ends of a U-shaped clip 11, said U-shaped clip having detachable engagement with a drum as will hereinafter appear.

The drum is provided with a holder or loop to detachably receive the hinge clip 11, as by providing a split band 12 having outstanding cars 13 so that the bend can be clamped around the drum 1 by a clamp bolt 14. The band 12 is provided with an integral element or holder 15. The closed end or bight of the U-shaped clip 11 has a slip joint relation with the loop 15 so that when the drum is to be emptied a vertical lift on the hinge clip will detach the cover from the drum.

To insure that the cover will always gravitate to closed position the ends of the hinge ears of clip 11 may be provided with outwardly projecting stops 16 which limit to all changes within the spirit and scope of the appended 7 claims.

A removable cover for drums comprising a split band tobe clamped around a drum, a U-shaped element secured to the band with its parallel legs. opening upwardly, a U-shaped clip having its bight slidingly received 7 between the legs of the element and held thereby with its arms extending in a horizontal radial relation to the band, and a drum cover hinged to the clip arms.

2. A removable cover for drums comprising a split band to be clamped around a drum, a U-shaped element secured to the band with its parallel legs opening upwardly, a U-shaped clip having its bight slidingly received between the legs of the element and held thereby with its arms extending in a horizontal radial relation to the band, a drum cover hinged to the clip arms, and stops on the clip arms to limit opening hinged movement of the drum cover.
