4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful im provements in garbage receptacles and the primary object of the present invention is to vprovide a receptacle having a hinged closure and including lever means for actuating said closure to cause the contents within the receptacle to be quickly and readily discharged therefrom to a collector wagon positioned beneath the same.
Another important object of the present invention' is to provide a receptacle embodying novel and improved means for attaching the same relative to a supporting structure whereby the receptacle will not be tipped over or removed.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a garbage receptacle, the supporting legs of which are so designed as to permit a collector Wagon of a size greater than the diameter of the container to be conveniently placed thereunder to receive the'controlled discharge from the receptacle.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a garbage receptacle that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the-receptacle constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front elevational viewof Figure l and with dotted lines showing the covers in an open position;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the receptacle in slightly modified form, and showing the bottom in a closed position;
Figure 5 is a similar view of Figure 4 and showing the bottom in an open position;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary rear elevational view taken substantially on the plane of section line B6 of Figure 4;
Figure '1 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of the receptacle showing both the cover and body in a closed position thereto; and,
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the receptacle in still further modified form.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figures 1-3 inclusive,
wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral It) represents a preferably cylindrical casing which is open at both ends.
Hingedly secured to the lower edge of the casing, as at i2, is a lower closure or bottom 14. Also hinged to the upper edge of the casing, as at it, is an upper preferably concavo convex closure or cover is provided with a substantially U-shaped gripping bracket 20.
Tightly embracing the casing near its upper end, is a band 22 fixedly secured to the casing by rivets or the like 24. The terminal ends of this band project outwardly from the casing to receive suitable fasteners for attaching the device to a supporting structure.
The casing is supported in an elevated position by legs 28 having their lower ends turned outwardly to offer a greater bearing surface. The upper ends of these legs are inclined upwardly as at 30, and are fixedly secured to the lower portion of the casing, whereby the legs are disposed vertically in spaced relation to the outer periphery of the casing, so that a suitable garbage collecting wagon of a width greater than the diameter of the casing may be positioned under the bottom to receive the contents discharged from the casing. 1
Pivotallysecured to the casing near its upper end, is a lever 32 having a reduced hand gripping portion 34 at one end. The other end of the lever is pivotally connected to the upper end 25 of an upper link bar 36 slidably mounted in spaced guides or eye members 38 carried by the casing. At the lower end of link 36 is provided a socket an that engages the spherical member 42 at the upper end of a lower link 44, pivotally mounted, as at 46, on the bottom I4.
A substantially U-shaped bracket 48 is removably secured to the casing and engages lever 32 when the bottom is in a raised position. When the lever 32 is disengaged with member 48, the weight of the material within the casing will cause the bottom to swing downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawings.
Reference is now directed to Figures 4-7 inclusive wherein there is disclosed a receptacle in slightly modified form. The numeral 50 represents 2. preferably cylindrical casing provided with a hinged bottom closure 52 and a hinged upper closure 54. The upper closure 54 is provided with a hand gripping bracket 58 secured to its central portion.
The casing is supported in an elevated position by legs 56 having their lower ends turned outwardly and their upper ends inclined inwardly and secured to the casing.
Pivotally mounted on the casing is a lever bar 60 having an angular hand gripping portion 2 at one end. The opposite end of bar is pivotally secured to the upper end of a link 64 pivotally mounted on the bottom closure.
The casing, like the first embodiment disclosed in Figures 1-3 inclusive, is provided with an embracing band 65 fixedly secured near its upper end by rivets or the like 68 and said band has outwardly turned projecting ends 1d that are suitable secured to a supporting structure for retaining the casing in a fixed position.
It is preferred that the bottom closures and upper closures for both previously described embodiments of the casing, be provided with annular recesses 12 that receive annular substantially channel-shaped gaskets 14 that engage the respective lower and upper edges of the casing, as shown best in Figure 5 of the drawings.
Reference is now directed to Figure 8, wherein there is disclosed a still further modification of the receptacle.
In this form, a semi-circular band It is fixedly secured to the cylindrical casing 15 at the center thereof. Sub-axles 18 project outwardly from each end of the'band and pivotally engage the upper converging ends of pairs of legs 89 on opposite sides of the casing.
Also pivoted on the stub axles 73, are theouter ends of a yoke 82 having a centrally disposed outwardly projecting arm 84 that is suitably secured to a supporting structure.
The closure 85 having a handle 8? is hinged to the upper portion of the casing and is pivoted relative to the casing as the casing is tipped outwardly by the handle lever 83 fixed to the axles.
To prevent backward tipping of the casing toward the supporting structure, there is provided a stop at the lower end of the casing that engages an arm 82 fixed to one of the legs. The contents within the casing bears against the closure as the casing is tipped forwardly, to open the closure so that the contents may be discharged therefrom.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages or" the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention a herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new 151 1. A arbage receptacle comprising a casing open at both ends, a hinged bottom at one end of said casing, a hinged cover at the opposite end of said casing, means for Supporting said casing in an elevated position, a handle pivotally mounted on said casing, and link means operatively connecting said bottom to said handle for pivotal movement of said bottom relative to said casing, said link means including an upper link pivotally secured at one end to said handle, a socket at the free end of said upper link, a lower link pivotally mounted at one end on said bottom, and a spherical member carried by the free end of said lower link for engaging said socket.
2. A garbage receptacle comprising casing open at both ends, a hinged bottom at one end of said casing, a hinged cover at the opposite end of said casing, means for supporting said casing in an elevated position, a handle pivotally mounted on said casing, an upper link pivotally secured at one end to said handle, a socket at the free end of said upper link, a lower link pivotally mounted at one end on said bottom, a spherical member carried by the free end of said lower link for engaging said socket, means for guiding vertical movement of said upper link, and means for locking said bottom in a raised position.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said guide means includes eye members fixedly secured to said casing in spaced vertical relationship.
4. The combination of claim 2 wherein said locking means includes a U-shaped bracket carried by said casing for engaging said handle when said bottom is in a raised position.
