Description

Unurnn STATES PATENT @rmcn.
MARION n. JABOEUF, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-CLEANING GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,431, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed November 3,1883. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION R. JAnoEUF, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lVindow- Cleaning Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object the better protection of women and others when engaged in washing and cleaning windows.
The perilous position in which women occupied in cleaning upper windows from the outside place themselves, and the many lamentable accidents which have occurred to women so engaged by falling from the window sill or frame on which they are seated, and which any passing occurrence or object in the street distracting their attention is liable to produce, have suggested the necessity of a suitable guard which shall prevent the cleaner from falling in case of her losing her balance or releasing hold of the sash of the window she is engaged incleaning. This my inventionprovides for in. a very simple and perfect manner by employing a guard or protector which may be readily applied to or removed and transferred from window to window, and which, when not in use, may be conveniently packed away in a small space or compass, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a face view, as seen from the inside of an apartment, of a windowframe, in part, with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a View in a reverse direction of the samethat is, from the exterior of the building; Fig. 3, a plan view with the windowframe in section, and Fig. 4 a transverse vertical section on the line :0 w in Fig. 2.
A is the frame of an upper and lower sliding sash window, and B the sill thereof. The guard or protector consists, in part, of two independent uprights or rods, 0 G, bent to form inside and outside legs, I) c, united above and spaced or arranged at such a distance apart that; the longerleg, b, of each rod will fit down within and through one or more sockets, d, (seeFigs. 1, 3, and 4,) secured on the window-frame or wood-work below said frame in the interior of the apartment, while the other or shorter leg, 0, will enter or may be attached to a board, "D, arranged to rest upon the window-sill. These rods 0 0 thus connect with the board D and engage with the sockets d d at a distance apart which is equal, or nearly so, to the width of the Window. In the upper connecting portions of the legs of these rods, where the same join the outer legs, 0 c, a crook, e, is formed. These bends or crooks e serve to provide for the attachment and support, free from slipping, of a flexible strap or stretcher, E, which is secured at its ends to the rods 0 O at such parts, and which forms a check or support for the back of the woman engaged'in cleaning the outside of the window, and keeps her from falling as she sits upon the bottom of the window-frame and upper surface of the board D, where her weight serves to hold the guard or protector down to its place.
A window-cleaning guard or protector thus constructed may readily be put in its place 'or removed and transferred, when required,
from window to window; also be packed away in a small space or compass when not required for use, by simply lifting the rods 0 C out of the sockets d d and detaching them, if desired, from the board D.'
In some cases the board D may be permanently-secured to the outer legs, 0 c, of the protector, and means be provided, .whenthe inner legs, Z) Z), are in their sockets, for holding said inner legs at any desired elevation,
so as to form of the board D a seat, which is raised from the sill to facilitate the cleaning of the upper panes of the sash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A window-cleaning guard or protector composed of two independent rods or uprights constructed to form inner and outer legs, a strap or flexible stretcher arranged to connect the upper outside portions or legs of said uprights, and a sill-board with which the lower ends of the outer legs of the uprights connect, substantially as specified.
2. In a window-cleaning guard or protector, the combination of the fixed sockets d d with IOC a crook, a, in combination with the flexible stretcher or strap E, substantially as specified.
MARION R. JABOEUF.
the independent uprights or rods G G, constructed to form inner and outer legs, I) c, the flexible stretcher or strap E, and the sill-board D, essentially as shown and described.
5 3. I11 aWindoW-cleaning guard or protector the independent uprights or rods 0 0, having \Vitnesses:
EDGAR TATE,
inner and outer legs, 0 c, and constructed with I Ronnnr TAYLOR ADAMS.
