TROUSERS HANGER Filed Sept. 11, 1957 INVENTOR. Haw/w Suva/v Arm/M45) United States Patent Ofiice 2,900,118 Patented Aug. 18, 1959 2 m ns TROUSERS HANGER Frank Simon, Brooklyn, N.Y. Application September 11, 1957, Serial No. 683,259
2 Claims. (Cl. 223-96) The invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, more especially to hangers to be suspended as from a hook or the like, such as of the type adapted to retain-full length-trousers, as by engaging the same in an inverted position and at the bottom or cufi portions thereof.
In the convenional hangers of this type, difficulty is experienced in accommodating satisfactorily, in a single hanger, trousers of widely different widths, as well as in securing substantially uniform pressure in the holding of the trousers especially when of different thickness of material. The invention has for an object to provide a novel hanger whereby various widths of trousers may readily be accommodated and a desired pressure established thereon, said pressure being then maintained substantially uniform throughout the entire holding area.
A further object of the invention is to provide holding means for contacting the trousers at .the bottom, said means not only being more conveniently and readily releasable but arranged to facilitate the introduction of a garment.
In carrying out the invention, an elongated abutment member is provided, the same supporting at its one end a pivoting member, such as an internally threaded post and upon which is supported pivotally a clamping bar or bars. The latter is designed to cooperate with the abutment member in supporting the trousers, the degree of separation being determined by a headed screw which is threaded to fit the post for axial adjustment with respect thereto.
The opposite, free ends of the abutment member and bars may be arranged to be then locked together as by being embraced by a slide element movable thereover, stop means being provided on the slide element to engage a longitudinal slot provided through the abutment member, the free end of which is made to project then beyond the free ends of the associated clamping bar or bars.
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view, in isometric projection, illustrating the novel hanger and with a number of pairs'of trousers suspended therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the hanger, shown without retention ofa garment, and indicates a clamping bar thereof released for insertion of a garment.
Fig. 3 is aplan view of the hanger; and Fig. 4 an end, elevation thereof, Without any garment suspended therefrom.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view of. the pivoting element for supporting the clamping bars and pivoting them to the abutment member.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, in plan, and Fig. 7 is a similar elevational view illustrating a modification in the manner of retaining the free end of a clamping bar to the abutment member for said bars.
Referring to the drawings, '10 designates an abutment merit of these bars is efiected in a manner such that they may be conveniently dropped to open the hangeras is indicated by the broken line position, Fig. 2 of the drawings-from their normal, generally horizontal location when it is desired to insert garments 15, particularly trousers. These are to be received by the hanger to hold them in an inverted position, that is to say, engaging them at their bottoms or cufi portions, as is indicated in Fig. 1.
The said bars in accordance with the invention are pivoted upon a tubular post 20 which extends horizontally through the abutment member and the respective bars, which latter and the abutment member are made of sufiicient length to accommodate trousers of maximum width, as is indicated in Fig. l of the drawings.
Provision is made, however, to hold normally and when the hanger is not in use the said clamping bars alongside the abutment member. This is eiiected not only by means of a headed screw 21 threaded into post 20, the head 22 of said screw contacting the outermost of the clamping bars to lock it together with the remaining ones against the abutment member; but, by gathering the free ends of said clamping bars, to lock the opposite ends of the same to said abutment member, for example, in a slide element 23'. To hold said slide element against working oil the end of the abutment member, the latter is provided with a slot 25, and a pin 26 extends through said slot and is retained therein.
It will be understood that when a garment is to be hung, the said slide element will be moved manually outwardly sufficiently for the slide to clear the clamping bars; whereupon head 22 will be manipulated to free one or more of the clamping bars to swing downwardly and become displaced sufficiently from the abutment member to permit insertion of the garment. The reverse operation will clamp the garment securely to the abutment member; and in moving then the slide element inwardly a further hold is had thereon and all members held in proper relationship, as is indicated in Fig. 1.
Recesses 28, 29 may be provided respectively in the abutment member and the 'adjacent clamping bars and juxtaposed to each other to accommodate the seam of the trousers.
Instead of the slide element, provision may be made to unite the free ends of the clamping bars to the corresponding end of the abutment member by means similar to .the post and headed screw arrangement for the pivoted ends of the bars. Thus, reference being had to Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, the free endof the bar 30 is provided with an inwardly directed, open slot 31 designed to receive an internally threaded post 32. The latter passes also through a slot 33 of the abutment member 34 which extends beyond the corresponding free end of the bar and is designed to register with the said slot 31 when juxtaposed thereto. By means of the head 35 of a threaded pin 36 fitting the post 32, the desired pressure may be applied also at this end of the hanger.
When it is desired to lower the bar, post 32 is drawn outwardly beyond slot 31 of the bar; and after the trousers have been inserted and clamped at the pivoted end, additional clamping is effected at the opposite end by means of the head 35, the post having first been returned to its engagement with slot 31. I
I claim:
1. A trousers hanger, comprising an elongated rigid abutment member provided with a longitudinal slot at one end; a rigid clamping bar associated lengthwise therewith and of lesser length; means passing through the unslotted end of the abutment member for pivotally mounting said clamping bar thereon, the opposite end of the latter terminating behind the associated abutment member; means associatedwith the pivotal mounting means to exert axially pressure between the pivoted ends of the abutment member and clamping, bar; and means slidably mounted about the opposite free ends of said abutment member and bar to hold said free ends, when juxtaposed, to each other, said slidable means being movable outwardly to free the said ends from each other, together with stop means for the slidable means to limit its outward travel and passing through the slot.
4 2. A trousers hanger according to claim 1, wherein the pivotal mounting means is adjustable axially.
