Description
(No Model.)
0. PpNlcoLsoN; SKIRT PROTECTOR.
PatentedNov. 27, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
CHARLES I. NIGOLSON, OF CHICAGO. ILLINOIS.
SKI RT-PROTECTO R.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,020, dated November 27, 1883,
Application filed May 2, 11583. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES 1. NIcoLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation, partly in section, of skirt-garments provided with my iniprovcd protector. Fig. 2 is aplan of the protector. Fig. 3 isa perspective of the same; and Figs. 4 and 5 are a side elevation and plan, respectively, of the fastening devices.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents the protector, which consists of a simple rectangular piece of gossamer pro vided with a loop, (1, arranged upon the outer side, and at one end thereof, and with fastening devices a, arranged along and within the longer sides, and two or more fastening devices, a arranged at its end. The fastening devices may consist of hooks or buttons; but I prefer to use the ordinary garment-clasp, which may be adapted to be secured to the pro tector by stitches passing through the loop b of the clamp, or by means of the prongs b thereof, or by both.
This being the construction, the operation is as follows: The protector is first folded longitudinally an d centrally. It is then shaped cir oularly and one end thereof passed throughthe loop a at the other end thereof, to such a distance as is necessary to adapt the protector to receive skirtgarments of any size or fullness, when the fastenings c are secured to the protector, so as to retain it in the size thus determined. In such shape the skirtgarments are arranged within the folds of the protector, and the fastening devices a are secured in the usual manner to the inner and the outer skirts of the wearer.
It will thus be seen that a protector which is not cumbersome, and which is readily attached and detached, and adjusted to dresses of varying sizes, is provided. It is apparent that the ends of the protector may be secured together, and the fastening devices a secured to the inncrskirt before longitudinally folding the protector and securing its opposite edge to the outer skirt.
Having described my invention and its op eration, What I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, an ad justable skirt-protector comprising a rectangular piece of water-proof material provided with fastening devices" along its opposite longer edges, and with means for varying the size of the protector lengthwise, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the water-proof protector A, provided with the fasteningdevices a and the loop a, and the end fastening devices, a substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CHAS. P. NIOOLSON.
