Description

(No Model.)
W, H. 5888,08. f SULKY PLOW'.
No. 288,888. .Patented Nov. 27 1888.
Wrlzaesse Nrrno STAT-ns SU LKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part vof Letters Patent No. 288,998, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed May 2l, 1883., (No model.)
i Sellersburg, in the county of Clark and State `of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sulky-Plows; and I doV hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This my invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in sulky-plows, consisting in the application of a t-hird wheel, hinged to the rear end of the beam, for the purpose of supporting it to prevent the tongue from rising in backing the plow from under roots or other obstructions, without which it is almost impossible to extricate it. This lastnamed third wheel is not intended to travel upon the ground at all times, but is held up by means of a lever at the side of the beam while the plow is in operation but in case of obstruction it is lowered' and pressed firmly on the ground, and by the act of backing the plow the tongue will be slightly raised and bring the weight of the plow upon the wheel, and thereby render it easily extricated e by backing.
The object of this my invention is to provide a new and useful device for the purpose of supporting the rear end of the beam of sulky-plows, in orderfto prevent the tongue from rising in backing it from under roots or other obstructions while in operation, without which it is almost impossible to eXt-ricate it when obstructed. I attain the above object by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe plow, showing the hinged wheel in the rear. Fig. 2 is a flat view of the side of the wheel and link-connections. Fig. 3 is a flat view of the face of the wheel and edges of the link-connections.
Similar letters referto similar p arts th roughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the beam of the plow, B is the plow, and C- is the diskcutter, all of which are made in form as shown in the drawings.
D D are the main wheels of the plow, and E is the axle, F is the seat, and G G are the operating-levers, all of which are made in form and arranged as shown.
H is the truck or third wheel, which is made somewhat in the forni of a pulley, and hinged to the rear end of the plow-beam by means of links I I in such a manner as to permit the wheel to be raised from the ground and lowered again at pleasure by means of the lever K androd J, which connects it with the links I. This lever K is hinged to the side of the beam A in front of the seat, to be convenient in lowering and raising the wheel H, which only rests upon the ground when necessary to back the plow in relieving it from obstruction, after which it is raised again by means of the lever K, and is kept in that position by means of a spring-pawl engaging with a quadrant-formed ratchet, L, secured to t-he side of thebeam. Therefore I do not clai in anythingy shown or described in Patent No. 197,159, dated Xovember I3, 1877; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in sulky plows, is
In combination with the beam of a sulkyplow, the hinged wheel H, and links I I, by which it is hinged to the beam, with connecting-rod J, and lever K, by which the wheel is operated, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. HARROD.
