ATTORNEYS Aries PATENT GFFIGE. I
WILLIAM L. EDWARDS, OF ELLISON, ILLINOIS.
IMPRovEMENT |N PLows.
Specification forming partvof Letters Patent No. 90,016, dated April 24, 1877; application led November 16, 1876.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. EDwARDs, of Ellison, in the county of Warren and State of- Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ofthis specification.
The nature ot' my invention `consists in the construction and arrangement of a sulky-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth'.
In order to enable others skilled in the artto which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my plow, and Fig. 2 is a rear view ofthe same.
A represents the axle, made square, as shown, and provided at each end with a disk, B, having a series of perforations, In the center ot' each disk B is pivoted a lever, G, formedat the lower end with a projecting spindle, a., upon which the driving-wheel E is placed. Each lever O is provided with a pivoted spring-dog, D, to enter either one ofthe perforations x in the disk B. By this means one or both wheels may be raised or lowered, as required, with relation to the axle.
G represents the plow-beam, held on top of the axle A by means of a square clip, b, passing around'the axle, and fastened to the under side of the plow-beam. H is a brace, secured to the left side of the plow-beam, and running to and surrounding the axle, for steadying the beam.
The clip or box b is movable on the axle, thus admitting ot the plow being set easilyto or from land, as may be required.
.J is the tongue, fastened on a frame,1, and this frame connected to the axle by two braces, d d, at each side, which braces form loops surrounding rounded portions of the axle. The tongue thus worksindependent of the plow, and is looselyT attached to the axle. The front end of the plow-beam is, by a chain, e, connected with the tongue or tongueframe, to keep the plow from tipping too low.
It will be noticed that by means oi' either lever C the plow may be raised out of the.
ground, and the depth at which it is to work easily regulated.
rlhe tongue J may be used either for two 0r three horses by changingfrom the outside of the frame' to the center for the two horses. The rear end of the tongue is slotted transversely, so that the tongue maybe set to the right or left, to give the plow more lor less land.
By the construction of the tongue as described it works loose from all attachments, and there is no bearing on the neck-yoke except the weight of the tongue.
K is the drivers seat, supported on a spring in the center of the frame I for three horses, and on top of the tongue when two horses only are used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a wheel-plow, of the square axle A, the beam G, supported on top ofthe same, and held thereto by the clip b, and the brace H, connected to the beam, and having a square loop to pass around the axle, thereby providing for lateral adjustment of the beam on the axle, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of October, 1876.
WILLIAM L.. EDWARDS. Witnesses:
G, L. Evnnr, MERCHANT RANDALL.
