Description

(No Model.) I W. BELLAIR$.
TRACE CARRIER.
Patented Nov. 20, 1883.
RS PholoLillwgnuher, Wathlngllm. a c.
UNITED STATES PATENT rricnl.
\VILLIAM BELLAIRS, OF MITGHELLVILLE, IOWA.
TRACE-CARR] ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 288,762, dated November 20, 1883. Application filed May 7, 1883. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM BELLAIRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchellville, in the county of Folk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trace-carriers, and has for its object the suspending traces by their cockeyes or ends to metal hooks, in such a manner that they are not liable to be detached and fall to the ground.
The peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts will be more fully pointed out 'and described in the specification and claims,
reference being had 'to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the parts in place, with the tracering passed over one of the hooks. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, show.- ing the curved hooks and pivoted pawls.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a frame or body of the carrier, provided-with loops or slots a; and b, the slots abeing formed for the reception of the hip-straps, and the slots 22 for the reception of the back-strap, and crupper body.
Two curved projections, c, extend upward from the plate A, the object of which is to protect the inner parts from injury, and to prevent the lines from becoming entangled or held by the hooks.
Frame A is formedwith a central cross-bar, b, that has a central upward angular projection, formed for a purpose hereinafter described.
Two curved hooks, d, extend upward from plate or frame A, near the outer ends of crossbar 12. Said hooks curve inward toward each other, and their inner ends are slotted to receive the catches or pawls e, that are pivoted within said slots at points a short distance from their outer ends, the inner ends of said pawls extending downward a short distance below the upper face of the central projection, t, and against the outer faces. Said pawls abut or strike, and prevent the traces unhitching. The outer ends of said pawls are formed with curved lips or finger-pieces g, by which the lower ends of said pawls are pressed outward against the base of the curved hooks d, when desired to release the traces.
On the under sides of the curved hooks d are secured flexible springs f, the free ends of which press against pawls e, and force them against the center projection. i, thereby securely looking the traces in place when passed over the hooks d.
The operation is as follows: The traces, by their ends or cockeyes, are placed over the hooks d, down to the upper face of frame A. The lower ends of pawls e are forced back against the hooks d until the ends of the traces or cockeyes pass under said pawls, when, by gravity or the pressure of the springs f, their ends rest against the central projection, i. To remove the traces, place the thumb or finger against the part 9, force the lower end of the pawl against the inner face of hook (I, when the trace can be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A trace-carrier composed of a bed-frame having dome-shapedor curved upward projections, and curved hooks having at their inner end swinging spring-pressed pawls, providedwith finger-pieces, substantially as shown and specified.
2. In combination, the frame A, curved projection c, the curved hooks d, having pivoted pawls e, finger-pieces g, and springs f, with the central cross-bar, b, having central angular projection, t, substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BELLAIRS.
