This invention relates to an electrically operated appliance having a rotary type abrading and filing member associated therewith which can be used for the purpose of filing finger nails, toe nails, hard skin protuberances, and for other filing purposes.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an electrically operated appliance adapted to be used in the hand of an operator and having associated therewith a rotary abrading disc or member which can be used for thaei1 purpose of abrading and filing such objects as finger n s.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an abrading and filing head for attachment to rotary types of electrical appliances, such as safety razors, and which has associated therewith one or more readily detachable abrading and filing discs or members which can be safely and efiiciently used for filing such objects as finger nails, toe nails, etc.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during'the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved appliance in the hand of a user, ready to be used for abrading and filing purposes.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing abrading and filing discs and means for the support and drive of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the abrading and filing head with its guard cap removed.
Figure 4 is a transverse cross sectional view taken through the abrading and filing head of Figure 3, substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an exploded view showing the related parts of the improved abrading and filing head adapted for attachment to a rotary type electric appliance, such as a safety razor casing.

.for such purpose. The shafts 16 and 17 extend upwardly above the top margin of the neck 12 of the casing 10 and at their upper ends have ends 16 and 17 of polygonal cross section. It is within contemplation of this invention to provide a rotary type electrical appliance having merely a single shaft for driving a single rotary abrading and filing member of the head, if so desired.
Referring to the abrading and filing head A, the same includes a main casing or support frame 20 having a lower outwardly flared skirt 21 adapted to fit externally over the neck 12 of the appliance B, and upwardly therefrom having the inset collar 23 which may be marginally beaded at 24 at the top thereof. A top wall 25 may be integrally connected as part of the casing 20, located in a plane below the head 24 and attached thereto. This wall 25 may be provided with a pair of circular openings 27 and 28 therein, which are shown of rather large diameter in the drawing, but which may be reduced for the purpose for which this invention is adapted. These openings 27 and 28 are separated by a bridging portion 29 of the wall 25. The portion 29 has transverse openings 30 and 31 therein for receiving attaching screws, to be subsequently described.
Preferably there are provided upper and lower elongated plastic plates or discs 35 and 36 respectively which engage over and under the wall 25, in the relationship of parts shown in Figures 2 and 4, and which are clamped in this position by means of the bolts or screws to be subsequently described. These plates or discs 35 and 36 are provided with small openings 38 therethrough to receive the ends of the drive shafts 16 and 17 for free rotation therein. It is to be noted that the top plate 35 rests in the recess created by the bead 24 upon the casing portion 20, and the polygonal shaped keying ends able filing and abrading discs may vary. They may be sand or emery coated paper or plastic, with the abrasive material being on the upper surfaces thereof and the under surfaces being smooth, since the discs are adapted to rest upon the top surface of the plastic plate 35; the

The electrical motor has associated therewith ial drive shafts 16 and 17, both of which may rotate gt the same direction, although they may be oppositely given if the electric appliance B is provided with gearing is applied upon the discs 40 and 41 incident to abrading use.
The means for holding the head assembled in the form above described comprises a holding and guide plate 50 preferably of some highly polished metal although the same may be formed of any material. At its ends plate 50 is provided with circular openings 51 and 52 for receiving the projecting keying ends 16 and 17 of the drive shafts 16 and 17. At the opposite sides thereof the plate 50 is provided with depending screw threaded bolt shanks 54, the same having flanged spacer heads 55 which may be soldered or otherwise secured to the laterally extending ears at the sides of the plate 50, as shown in the drawing. These screw threaded shanks 54 are adapted to I extend transversely through openings 57 provided in the top plastic plate or disc 35; through the openings 30 and 31 of the ca'sing20, and through circular openings 58 provided in the lower disc or plate 36. The lower ends of the shanks 54 are adapted to receive nuts 59 engageable against the under surface of the plate or disc 36 for the clamping of the plates 35 and 36 to the wall 25, and likewise for the spaced clamping of the holding and guide plate 50 above the abrading discs 40 and 41.. It is to be noted that the abrading surfaces of the discs 40 and 41 are spaced from the under surface of the plate 50, as shown in Figures 2 and 4, and thus do not contact any nn-aware plate 50 is so shaped that a large segmental of each of the discs 40 and 4l-is upwardly exposed for filing purposes, and the edging 60 at the ends of the plate 50 may be arcuated to furnish a lateral supportfdr the finger nail, either in resting relation thereonor as a guide if it is adapted to rock-the finger during mar e: the nail, and the fleshy tip of the finger mayrest upon top of plate 50.
It is preferred to provide a transparent-plastic "guard cap 70 for slipping over the inset-topportioniyof the casing portion 20 of the head. This is shown in full lines in Figure 5 and in dot and dash lines in Figures 2-and 4. It furnishes a protection and guard for the hea'd and prevents loss of the filing discs.
The use of the improved abrading and filing -h'ail will be apparent from the foregoing. While it has beenshown as adaptable for use with-the motor partof an'el'ectric razor, it is within contemplation of the inventionfo use be readily disassembled merely by removing the from the screw threaded shanks 54. v
New discs 40 and '41 may be replaced since they may be laterally slipped from beneath the plate'50 when the head is removed-from the motor casing.
It is Within contemplation of this inventionto make the discs 40 and 41 reversible. That is, both'sides' maybe provided with abrading material, but in such event a felt or other type protector will be provided forthe'underside of the disc in order to prevent abrading. action'u'pon the plate35 as an incident'of pressure apphed' duringfiling.
Various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be made to the 'form of -invention herein shown and described, without departingfrbmthe spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim:
' 1. An abrading and filing head for attachment'to tary type electrical appliances having an upwardly extending drive shaft, comprising an inverted"cupped supporting casing for attachment to the electric appliance having'a top wall provided with an opening througlr'which said shaft is adapted to extend in freely rotatable relation therein and in projecting relation above said walLa holding and guard plate detachably mounted upon said :rotary type electrical appliances having a drive shaft, the combination of an inverted cupped casing having a top wall provided with an opening therein, a plate mounted -upon the top wall having asmaller opening therein aligning with the opening of the top wall for receiving the drive shaft of an electric appliance, a removable flat abraddisc having a keying opening centrally therein aligning with the openings in said plate and top wall, and a guard plate removably attached to the top wall of the casing having a plate portion with an opening therein aligning with the openings in the disc, plate and top wall for receiving therein the drive shaft of an electric appliance, the undersurface of said guardplate being spaced from v the top abrading surface of the disc and partially covering the abrading" surface of said disc and leaving exposed a portion of said abrading surface of the disc for filing purposes.

In a rotary electrical filing and abrading appliance the combination of a housing having an electrical motor nected to the neck of said housing having a top wall provided' with a passageway therethrough for receiving the outer end of the drive shaft in projecting relation, and a flat rotary type abrading disc provided with an opening keyed upon the projected end of the shaft for rotation by the latter.
*5. An appliance as described in claim 4 in which a guardplate is connected to the casing in spaced relation above the top of a portion of the abrading surface of said disc.

2. A device as described in claim 1 in which a top cap is provided detachably connected to said casing and covering said holding plate and disc.

In an abrading and filinghead for-attachment to '6."An'appliance as described in claim Sin which-a removablecap is detachably connected upon the top of the casing for sealing the disc and top of the casing-therein. 7. In a rotary electric abrading and filing appliance the combination of a supporting housing having an electric motor provided with dual rotary drive shafts projecting therefrom and located in spaced'relation, a removable cap mounted upon the casing having atop wall'struc ture' provided with openings into which the ends of the drive shafts project, a pair of rotary abrading discs having openings therein receiving in keyed relation therewith the projecting ends of said shafts to locate said discs in the same plane upon the top wall structure of said cap. 8; An appliance as described in claim 7 in whicha guard plate'is fixedly connected to the top wallstructure over adjacent portions of said discs with its under surface spaced from the top abrading surfaces-of said discs, the last mentioned plate leaving upwardly facing exposed portions upon each of said discs for abrading and filing purposes.
9. An appliance as described in claim 8 in which -a cover cap is provided detachably connected over the top of the plate to seal the discs therein.
