Feb.` 24, 1959 c. D. FowLER IDENTIFICATION BADGE HOLDER Filed Nov. 25, 1957 o n w z R, E N I O I 2 4 m w m 7. W O T W F A ,uwnehufvllifwnnnll "a #""i" -i D 5 E 2 C N e w R I A LI C IDENTIFICATION BADGE HOLDER Clarence D. Fowler, Seal-sport, Maine Application November 25, 1957, Serial No. 698,460
4 Claims. (Cl. litl-1.5)
This invention relates to a means for holding an identication such as used in factories, Shipyards, government buildings, and similar places of employment, and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.
It is the main object of the invention to provide a badge holder wherein the identification means, whether it be a photograph of the worker or a number assigned to him, is pivotally mounted upon a clip device to position the identification means in an upright position where it may be readily seen or read by a guard, there being a readily releasable detent between the badge and the clip for adjusting and retaining the identification means in a desired position.
More specifically, it is an important object of the invention to provide a support plate for a badge wherein an elongated clip member is pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin secured in the plate, the clip member having downwardly extended nodules adapted to seat in openings or depressions formed in the support plate, the openings or depressions being located in a circular path about the pivot pin.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l is a plan view of the identification badge,
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the support plate 1for the badge prior to installation of the clasp,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the base plate of the clasp, t
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the manner of impingement of fabric of a garment between an opening formed in the support plate and the clip, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view of a modified form of support plate.
Reference is lirst made to Figure 1 of the drawing, wherein there is shown an identication badge holder generally indicated by the reference character 10, which comprises a support plate 11 which may be of any desired shape and dimensions, and may be formed from any suitable material.
Upon the rear at face of the support plate, a clasp 12 is pivotally mounted, as will be presently described.
The plate 11 is formed with a pair of spaced openings 13 which are employed for securing a badge (not shown) upon the front face of the plate. Other means may be employed for mounting the badge without departing from the spirit of the invention. The plate 11 is also formed with an opening 14 positioned below the openings 13 and in the medial longitudinal axis of the plate. Formed concentrically with the opening 14, there are a series of openings 15 or depressions 15 as shown in Figure 6.
The clasp 12 in the present instance comprises an elongated base plate 16 of a length greater than the radial positions of the openings 15 or depressions 15' and the medial portion of vthe plate is formed with an United States Patent O 2,874,495 Patented Feb. 24, 1959 Mice 2 opening 17 which when aligned with the opening 14 receives a rivet 18 for pivotally mounting the clasp 12 upon the mounting plate 11.
The base plate 16 has an upwardly diverging arm 19 overlying a portion of the plate, the free end of which is provided with opposed pins 20 for mounting of a spring tensioned clip 21 for securing the badge to a por tion of a garment. The end of plate opposite the arm 19 is outwardly bent as at 22 so as to be slightly spaced from the plate 11, enabling the thumb nail of a wearer of the badge to raise the plate 16 so as to release the nodules 23 from the openings 15 or depressions 15', as the case may be, and permit rotation of the clasp 12 so that the nodules 23 may engage another selected pair or openings or depressions.
From a consideration of Figure 5, it is apparent that the fabric of aV garment indicated at 24, will be iirmly gripped by virtue of engagement between the depressions of the nodules and the end 25 of the clip 21.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the badge can be supported for display in an upright position for ready observation, regardless of what position the wearer may be required to secure the badge. For instance, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure l, the clasp 12 is in such position as to engage upon a vertical portion of a garment, such as the shoulder strap of a pair of Suspenders.
While I have shown and described preferred forms of the device, this is by way of illustration only, and I `consider as my own all such modifications in construction as fairly -fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an identification badge holder, a supporting plate having means for securement of a badge, a clasp pivotally mounted upon the rear face ofr said supporting plate and inter-engaging means between said plate and clasp for securing the badge in a required position upon a garment.
2. In an identitication badge holder, a supporting plate having means for securement of a badge, a rivet iixed in said plate, a clasp pivotally mounted on said rivet, said plate having a plurality of apertures formed therein positioned and spaced circumferentially of said rivet, said clasp having a base member, said base member having a pair of nodules complemental to respective pairs of apertures.
3. In an identification badge holder, a supporting plate having means for securement of a badge, a rivet fixed in said plate, a clasp pivotally mounted on said rivet, said plate having a plurality of apertures formed therein positioned and spa-ced circumferentially of said rivet to provide aligned pairs of apertures, said clasp having a base member, said base member having a pair of nodules complemental to respective pairs of apertures.
4. ln an identification badge holder, a supporting plate having means for securement of a badge, a rivet fixed in said plate, a clasp pivotally mounted on said rivet, said plate having a plurality of depressions formed therein positioned and spacedfconcentrically of said rivet to provide aligned pairs of depressions, said clasp having a base member, said base member having a pair of nodules complemental to respective pairs of depressions, said clasp having a spring tensioned clip, said clip having a free end complemental to a depression formed in one of said nodules.
