Description

0. W. BURGTORP.
UHAFE PAD FOR HARNES S.
(No Model.)
Patented Oct. 9, 1883.
fl 'l llll m H M .To 0056 whom, it may concern UNITED STATES ATET tries.
CHAFE PAD FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,260, dated October 9, 1883.
Application filed May 17, 1883.
Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. Buiae'ronn, of Petaluma, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented an Improved Ghafe-Pad for Harness; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful pad for harness, the object of which is'to provent chafing on the side of the horse.
It consists in a flap of leather sewed into the bend .or fold of the hame-tug just inside or back of the trace-buckle, and adapted to receive the back-band, whereby it is held flat, and said buckle is prevented from rubbing or chafing the side of the horse.
This invention is particularly adapted for double harness, as the trace-buckle is brought in closer proximity to the horse than in single harness.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my chafe pad for harness, showing it in connection with surrounding parts. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same.
.A is the halne-tug, having a keeper, a, and being attached at its rear end to a tracebuckle, B.
O is the trace or tug, engaging with the buckle B, and having its end inserted in the keeper a of the hame-tug. I have here shown a well-known form of trace-buckle, though any one usually used at thispoint in the harness would answer.
D is the belly-band, and E is the back-band which are secured to the tracebuckle above and below, as is usual. These two bands bind the buckle against the side of the horse, which results in chafing and soreness.
(N0 model.)
F is my pad. This consists of a flap of 0 leather wider than the trace-buckle, in order to intervene completely between said buckle and the horses side. This flap has a slot, f,
in its forward edge, by means of which it is se cured in the bend or fold of the hame-tug A by reason of said tug passing through the slot. This pad has also a top slot, 9, through which the back-band passes. This permits the pad to lie fiat, and at the same time effectually secures it without the aid of metallic or other fastening devices. The intervention of the pad at this point prevents the trace-buckle from coming in contact with the side of the horse, and therefore avoids all liability to chafe. It is not in the way, and presents a neat appearance.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, a chafe-pad arranged in harnesses where there are metal mountings, as I am aware it is not new; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a harness, the haine-tug A, trace-buckle B, and the backhand E and belly-band D, 65 whereby the trace-buckle is drawn up close to the horse, in combination with the leather flap or pad F, having slot f, whereby it is secured in the fold of the hame-tug, and slot to reeeive the back-band, said flap or pad 'lying between the trace-buckle and the horses side, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof Ihereunto set my hand.
CHARLES WV. BURGTORF.
