4 Claims. or. 128-157) This invention relates generally to surgical dressings and is more particularly concerned with a novel surgical dressing for forming a finger cot.
When the end of a persons finger, for example, is injured, it is very difficult to apply a first aid bandage thereon without the aid of another person. Oftentimes the immediate application of a first aid bandage is critical, and will result in the saving of an injured finger.
The primary object of invention is to provide a novel surgical dressing for forming a finger cot which includes means whereby the dressing may be readily applied by the injured individual without the aid of another person.
A more specific object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide a novel surgical dressing of the character involved, which includes an elongated flexible body member permanently formed as an arcuate trough having an open rear end and closed forward end, said body incorporating an integral flap portion extending to one side thereof for disposition in overlapping relationship on the opposite side of the trough for disposing said bandage in circumposed relationship about a persons finger, the inner rear portion of the trough and inner edge portion of the flap portion incorporating an integral layer of adhesive material, thus providing means whereby a surgical dressing is retained on a persons finger in circumposed relationship thereabout.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth is to provide, in a novel surgical dressing of the character involved, an integral pad portion conforming to the forward end portion of the body member for protecting an injury adjacent the forward end portion of a finger.
These together with other objects and advantages which will subsequently become apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter is described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the novel surgical dressing prior to application on an injured finger;
Figure 2 is a perspective view, similar to Figure 1, showing an injured finger disposed within a surgical dressing, and indicating by means of arcuate phantom lines the manner in which the flap portion of the dressing will be folded for disposing the dressing in circumposed relationship about an injured finger;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the surgical dressing disposed about an injured finger looking at a side opposite that shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the novel surgical dressing circumposed about an injured finger, looking in the same direction as Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 5--5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken substantially on on line 6--6 of Figure 5; and
2,847,695 Patented Aug. 12, 1958 "ice I 0 dressing 10 comprises a flexible body member 12 of any suitable material, such as plastic, gauze, or the like, said body member being form-ed as an arcuate trough including side portions 14 and 16 and a suitable arcuate bottom portion 18. The rear end of the trough defined by the body member is open for permitting the insertion of the finger therein, and the forward end 20 is closed, the trough tapering toward the forward end of the body member for substantially conforming to the configuration of a finger. The forward end 20 of the body member has an upwardly opening notch portion 22 extending into the upper edge thereof for facilitating the folding of the bandage or dressing in circumposed relationship about an injured finger. The side portion 16 of the body member continues in an elongated flap portion 24 which may be angularly directed toward the forward end of the body member, as clearly seen in Figure 5, for facilitating the disposition of the same in overlying relationship relative to the side portion 14- of said body member in the manner indicated by the phantom lines of Figure 2. The rear end portion of the body member 12 may be slightly enlarged, as seen at 26, for conforming in a suitable manner about the middle portion of a finger.
Suitably secured in the forward end portion of the body member is a pad member 28 of gauze, or any other suitable material, which defines an arcuate trough closed at its forward end and open at its rear end, as clearly seen at 36 and 32 respectively, for readily receiving therein the injured end of a finger.
Thus, in use, an injured finger is disposed in the surgical dressing, as seen in Figure 2, after which the side portion 14 of the surgical dressing is disposed adjacent the outer surface of said finger, and the flap portion 24 of the dressing is folded in overlying relationship, as indicated by the phantom lines of Figure 2, on the outer surface of the side 14 of the dressing.
Extending on the inner side of the flap portion 24 adjacent the upper edge thereof is a suitable layer of adhesive material 34 which will readily adhere to the outer surface of the side 14 of the dressing, and extending about the inner surface of the rear edge of the body member 12 is a strip of adhesive material 36 which will readily adhere to the finger upon which the bandage is to be disposed.
Thus, there has been disclosed a novel surgical dressing for forming a finger cot which readily conforms to the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
The foregoing is considered illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A surgical dressing for self application to the end portion of a finger or the like comprising an elongated flexible body member permanently formed as an arcuate trough for disposition longitudinally along the outer surface of a finger, said trough including an open rear end and a closed forward end portion, one side of the body member being of a greater length than the other and defining a longitudinal flap portion for disposition in overlying relationship on an outer side portion of the other side of the body member, said body member including a strip of adhesive material 011 the inner surface thereof adjacent the open end of the body member, and a strip of adhesive material extending the length of the inner surface of the flap portion for facilitating the forming of a finger cot in circumposed relationship about an injured finger.

A surgical dressing for self application to the end portion of a finger or the like comprising an elongated flexible body member permanently formed as an arcuate trough for disposition longitudinally along the outer surface of a finger, said trough including an open rear end and a closed forward end portion, one side of the body member being of a greater length than the other and defining a longitudinal flap portion for disposition in overlying relationship on an outer side portion of the other side of the body member, said body member including a strip of adhesive material on the inner surface thereof adjacent the open end of the body member, and a strip of adhesive material extending the length of the inner surface of the flap portion for facilitating the forming of a finger cot in circumposed relationship about an injured finger, said body member including an integral pad having an arcuate trough configuration conforming to the forward end portion of the body member for protection of the end portion of an injured finger.
3. .A surgical dressing for self application to the end portion of a finger or the like comprising an elongated flexible body member permanently formed as an arcuate trough for disposition longitudinally along the outer surface of a finger,- said trough including an open rear end and a closed forward end portion, one side of the body member being of a greater length than the other and defining a longitudinal flap portion for disposition in overlying relationship on an outer side portion of the other side of the body member, said body member including a strip of adhesive material on the inner surface thereof adjacent the open end of the body member, and a strip of adhesive material extending the length of the inner surface of the flap portion for facilitating the forming of a finger cot in circumposed relationship about an injured finger, said body member including a notch portion extending into the upper edge of the closed end of the body member facilitating the wrapping of the sides of the surgical dressing in circumposed relationship about an injured finger.
4. A surgical dressing for self application to the end portion of a finger or the like comprising an elongated flexible body member permanently formed as an arcuate trough for disposition longitudinally along the outer surface of a finger, said trough including an open rear end and a closed forward end portion, one side of the body member being of a greater length than the other and defining a longitudinal flap portion for disposition in overlying relationship on an outer side portion of the other side of the body member, said body member including a strip of adhesive material on the inner surface thereof adjacent the open end of the body member, and a strip of adhesive material extending the length of the inner surface of the flap portion for facilitating the forming of a finger cot in circumposed relationship about an injured finger, said body member including a notch portion extending into the upper edge of the closed end of the body member facilitating the wrapping of the sides of the surgical dressing in circumposed relationship about an injured finger, said body portion tapering forwardly to conform to the contour of a finger, the upper edge of the flap portion extending angularly toward the closed end of the body member for facilitating the formation of a conical protecting cot about an injured finger.
