DISTENDER FOR NOSTRILS Filed Feb. 17, 1930 4 TTURNE/ patented Jan. 5, 1932 GEORGE A. SIMMONS, F PORTLAND, OREGON DISTENDER FOR NOSTRILS Application filed February 17, 1930. Serial No. 429,019.
This invention relates generally to appliances for the nose, and particularly to a distender for nostrils adapted to hold same in a position for the free passage of air.
The main object of this invention is to provide a nostril distender for persons afflicted with nasal stoppages, thereby enabling them to breathe through the nose, especially while asleep.
The second object is to providea distender for the nostrils which will readily adapt itself to various sizes of nostrils, which will be inexpensive to manufacture and easy to sterilize.
These, and other objects, will become more apparent from the specification following as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the head of a wearer 20 shaving the device in use.
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the device.
Figure 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 4.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
eferring in detail to the drawings, there is shown in Figures 2 and 3 athimble shaped distender tapering slightly to the end 11 and having a flange 12 formed at the opposite end thereof. The body of the distender 10 is preferably somewhat oval in form and the entire device is made of a relatively soft rubber or other suitable material.
In the form of the device shown in'Figure 5 the distender 13 is shaped similar to that shown in Figures 2 and 3, except that it is slotted through one side thereof to form the opening 14. The material in the edges adjacent to the slot 14 is thinner than in the opposite side 15 of the distender. The flange 1'? extends around this form ofthe device, except for the slot 14.
The advantage of those using the distender arises in its adaptability to different sizes of nostrils.
In Figure 1 is shown the device so in actual flanges 12 and 17 is to limit the distance in which'the device can be inserted into the nose. There is also a gradual taper in the wall thickness of the distender away from its flange to facilitate the introduction of the distender into the nostril.

1 l. A nostril distender consisting of a longitudinally split tapering soft rubber sleeve whose walls taper downwardly toward the small end, and having an outturned flange around the large end thereof and whose wall increases in thickness circuinferentially to ward its split side.
2. A nostril distender consisting of a longitudinally split open sleeve of flexible rubber tapering from oneend thereof and having a flange formed around the opposite end thereof and having its side reducing in thickness circumferentially toward its split por tion.
