Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Goonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kings Mountain, in the county of 1 Cleveland and State of North Carolina, have invented a new i and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the followingis a specification. I

My invention relates to that class of machines which are used for cleansing and renovating soiled clothes by? the application of steam; and it consists of certain details of con struction, which will be fully hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.

The complete machine consists, essentially, of two parts, viz: the lid or cover A and the bottom or body 13. The body B is a rectangular or other suitably formed box provided with a metallic bottom and with the sides and ends thereof of Wood, although all the parts might be constructed of some noircorrosive metal.

The false bottom consists of a perforated bed-piece, the perforations or ports being shown at c", Fig. 2, longitudinal 0 near the edges of the bed-piece, and cross-bars a, secured to the side bars. The object of this construe tion is toprevent the clothes which are to be cleansed from lying too compactly, and' the holes or apertures c readily allow the steam to pass up from the bottom chamber, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 4. In use the soiled clothes are laid upon the false bottom over the water previously poured 0 into the machine. The machine is placed upon a suitable furnace or stove, and the steam, when generated, passes under and over the clothes through the'side ports and upward through the false bottom, as clearly explained. 5 If it shouldbe found that too much steam is generated, it may be readily allowed to escape through the ports or vents a in the lid by simply revolving the diagonal bar a. The dirty water is drawn off by means of the stop-cock or faucet F without removing the machine.

If it should be desired to make a more extended use of the machine, as in large laundries, steam might be admitted with the chain bers from a separate boiler through a stopcock in the bottom.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. A wash-boiler or steamer consisting of. a receptacle having side steam-chambers, a perforated removable bottom located a short distance above the bottom of said receptacle and forming a water-reservoir and steam-chamber, a removable tray located at or near the center i of the receptacle, the interior walls of the side steam-chambers being provided with one series of ports immediately below the upper removable tray, and a second series of ports at or near the upper part of the said side steamchambers, and a cover, substantially as set forth.

2. A wash-boiler or steamer consisting of a bottom of the receptacle, substantially as set forth.
