Description

A. LOHMANN.
BUILER.
.WASH- Patenned. Aug. 1,1876.
LME/C N. PETERS, FHOTO-LITHDGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
AUGUST LOHMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF PART 0F HIS EIGHT TO CHARLES BEENZ AND CHARLES VOSS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VW`ASHBO|LVERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 80,608, dated August 1, 1876; application tiled July 1, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUsr LoHMANN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash- Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description ofthe nature thereof, suflcient to enable others skilled in the art to which my :invention appertains to fully understand, make, and4 use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, n Which ,V
Figure lis a longitudinal vertical section of the boiler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the interior thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
'My invention consists of a circulating Washboiler, provided with pipes in tiers, whereby the steam and hot water will act on the clothes in various streams; valves in the false bottom of the boiler for preventing the ascent of steam and hot water through said bottom, and consequently causing the same to ascend the proper pipes, and guards for preventing the articles to be washed, closing the valves; the pipes, false bottom, with its valves and guards, being made removable, whereby the entire interior of the boiler is accessible for cleansing and other purposes.
Referring' to the drawings, A represents the body of the boiler, and B the lid or cover, which will be securely held in position by catches G or otherwise.'
Near the bottom of the body A there is secured a ledge, D, Iwhich projects horizon- 4tally inward from the sides of the body, and vforms the support for a plate, E, Which,- with the ledge, constitutes a false bottom of the body.
From the ledge D there rise pipes F F, whose upper ends are connected to and communicate with a continuous pipe, G, which, extending horizontally, is located near the top of the body A, and perforated on its inner face. From the ledge D there also rise Vthe clothes or other articles.
pipes H, at whose upper ends are horizontal pipes J, which are located near the middlev of the body A, and perforated on their inner faces.
It will be seen that the body A has the pipes G J at its sides and ends, and they are located at the top and middle thereof, so as to form tiers or series at different heights.
In the plate E there are openings a, which are to be occupied by tloat valves K on the under side of the plate, said valves being surrounded by guards for preventing loss of position of the valves.
On the upper side of the plate there are guards L, which curve over the valvular openings a, so as to prevent pressure of clothes and other articles on the valves, but without interfering with the operation of the latter.
The parts being in position, water is placed in the body A to a height sufficient to float the -valves K and cause them to close the openings a, the article to be washed placed on the guards G, and the lid or cover B tted on the body, the catches C closing against the lid, so as to form a steam-tight joint between the lid and body.
The boiler is set on the stove or fire, and when the steam is sufficiently high it rises in the pipes F H, and carries the hot water with it, and the streams thereof are ejectedy through the perforations of the pipes G J in several columns of various heights against The" streams then descend, and, pressing against and opening the` valves K, unite with the water remaining at the bottom of the body A, and then rerise in the pipes F H. This circulating action of the boiling Water directed simultaneously on the top and middle of the mass ot' articles `removes the dirt thereof in a short time, and thoroughly cleanses them.
The pipes F H, with their connected perforated pipes G J, are made removable from the ledge D, as is also the plate E, With the valves and guards 5 consequently said pipes and plate may be withdrawn from the body A, and thus the entire interior of the body is accessible for cleansing and other purposes.
The dirtylwater and sediment Will be readily removed by means ot' a pipe, faucet, or other- Wise, as at b.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The wash-boiler, with the removable pipes F H and G 1, and the removable falsebottom plate E, with valves K and guards'L, as arranged, and for the purpose set; forth.
AUGUST LOHMANN. Witnesses JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, H. E. HINDMARSH.
