GLASS -si-fADE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 281,609, dated July 17, 1883.
l Application med May 28,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BRUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwin township, (Pittsburg P. 0.,) county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a new and' useful Improvement in Glass Shades, and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact, description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of thisv specication, in which-like letters indicating, likeparts- ,Y n
Figure lis a perspective View of my improved glass shade, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in glass shades for lamps, gas-jets, and
similar lights; and in general terms it consists of a shade having a rounded body portion, a iiat top or upper lreiiecting-surface, and a cen- `tral chimney or draft -tube, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed. u
In the drawings, a represents the body portion of my improved shade, which is of general rounded form, approximating, by prefer ence, the shape of the central zone or segment of a sphere. The lower edge of this body portion is, however, contracted or drawn in, as at a', and is anged outward at the rim a2, forming thereby a base for support upon the usual .or any suitable shade-holder. Over the upper part of the body is' a flat or nearly liat cover or top, b, merging at the center into an upwardly extending draft-tube or chimney, c. This flat or horizontal top b may be made of white or other opaque glass, or may be painted or otherwise coated to prevent passage therethrough of light. Iprefer to secure this result and thereby adapt it for use as a reflectving-surface byetching, grinding, or otherwise roughening either its inner or outer surface, or, by preference, Yboth its inner and outer surfaces. This may be done by any `of the methods ordinarily practiced in the art. Light radiated upon this flat or horizontal top from a burner below will be reflected downward-at varying angles, the greater portion passing through the clear glass of the body a, and thus be effective in lighting the space below the level of thereflecting-surface. But one reflection is required in doing this, and consequently less light will pass .through thereiiector to the space above or be otherwise wasted than occurs where two or more reec- 'tions at nearly the same angle are required to direct the light downward. This multiplicity.
of reflections is characteristic of flaring or coneshaped reflecting-surfaces, such as have ordinarily been formed on the upper part of glass shades. By making a fiat or nearly fiat reflecting-top, as described and shown, I secure a greater percentage and better diffusion of light than heretofore in the space below the shade, where light is ordinarily most desired and useful.
In describing the body portion a as of rounded form, I wish to include the various'` suitable and well-known forms of body, and such body may also be ornamented in the usual manner and to any desired extent. Also, the tube c kmay be etched or roughened, as illustrated, or` it may be made of opaque glass or of clear glass, as may be desired, with reference to securing an ornamental appearance or for other reasons.
I claim herein as my inventionl. A glass shade for lamps and similar uses, having a flat or nearly fiat top, roughened or made opaque to form a reflecting-surface, substantially as set forth.
2. A glass shade having a rounded body, a, and a iiat or nearly flat cover or top, Z1, substantially as set forth.
3. A glass shade having a rounded body, a, of clear glass, a fiat or nearly flat top, b, of roughened or opaque glass, and a central tube, c, extending from such fiat top, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM H. BRUNT. Witnesses: y

C. L. PARKER.
