I. B. ATTERBURY. -O0mbined Lamp Chimney and Shade.

U ITED STA PATENT Damon.
THOMAS B. ATTERBURY, 0N5 PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LAMP CHIMNEY AND SHADE- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209.542., dated November 5, 1 878; applicationfiled October 25, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, THOMAS B. Arran- BURY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Alleghcny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gombined Lamp Chimney and Shade; and I do hereby declare the following tobe afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which, in three figures, illustrates my improved combined lamp chimney and shade.
My invention relates to the construction of combined lamp chimneys and shades; and consists in the combination and arrangement of the chimney with relation to the shade so that the latter is protected from the effects of heat, smoke, &c., as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Heretofore shades, globes, and reflectors have been used and combined with lamp- .chimneys in various ways. First, there was the ordinary chimney, with a separate globe sustained around it on a metallic frame; second, the chimney was dispensed with, the top opening of the globe reduced in size, and a clear-glass shade-holder was substituted for the metallic sustaining-frame; third, the now well-known lamp-chimney, havin g an enlarged bulb, (so as to combine in one article the theretofore separate chimney and globe,) was frosted or ornamented on its upper portion or taper, to give it either the function of a shade or reflector or a beautiful appearance, as the case might be fourth, a chimney with base or holder, flange, or gallery, formed in one piece with the chimney, and adapted to support a shade, has been devised, as has'also a spherical chim-. ney having a sustaining-seat for a shade.
The first of these methods is expensive, clumsy, and unsteady. The second is objectionable in use, as it admits air at the joint between the shade and holder, which interferes with combustion, and creates smoke and a flickering, unsteady light. It was especially designed for the purpose of utilizing the old shades, of which there were large stocks on hand, made unsalable by the introduction of the enlarged=bulb chimney. The third is objectionable because such chimneys, when frosted or ornamented, break readily, entailing great loss on both manufacturer and user. The fourth construction is objectionable owing to the difliculty of forming the chimney with a holder or flange for the shade, and because no adequate protection is afl'ordedto the shade.
My invention obviates all of these objections and has other advantages.
In the drawing I have shown it applied to an enlarged-bulb lamp-chimney, a. It may, however, be applied to any of the ordinary forms of bulb-chimneys. I form the chimney a with a seat, shoulder, recess, or projection, 12, upon which to rest the shade, globe, or reflector c. The seat b may be made in various forms and in various places on the chimney, the purpose being to afford the shade, globe, or reflector a resting or sustaining point or seat; or the seat, shoulder, recess, or projection may be omitted entirely, and the shade be so adapted to the shape of the chimney that it shall fit snugly and securely upon its upper tapering part. The shade 0 may be of any desired shape or ornamentation. The
combined article is capable of varied, beautiful, and striking effects.
Among the advantages are the avoidance of the rattling and unsteadiness and expense of the shade-holders. The chimney, not requiring to be frostedor ornamented, does not break so easily, while the shade, even 1 f ornamented, is so protected by the interposltion of the chimney as to be comparatively free from danger of breakage by the heat. The chimney is protected by the close-fitting shade from the cold outside air, and thereby a large amount of breakage is prevented.
These articles are made in the usual way, and can be made at small cost.
I am aware that a shade combined with a chimney having a gallery, holder, or base for said shade has heretofore been devised, as has also a shade combined with a translucent base, extending upwardly and outwardly, having an oflset or shoulder for supporting the shade, and an upwardly and inwardly extending portion fitting within the shade,'and do not claim the same provided the chimney be not conas to protect the same from heating, becomstructed and extended in such manner as to ing smoked, &c., substantially as specified.
protect the shade and obtain the results here- In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS inbgl'ore ripelcified; but t d d B. ATTERBURY, have hereunto set my hand.
