GEORGE F. WEEK, OF ROCHESTER PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'I O PHOENIX GLASS COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn F. WEHR, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to lamps, its object being to provide a lamp so constructed that the shade may be supported in position on the lamp without the employment of any brass or metal fittings, thereby greatly enhancing the appearance of the lamp and at the same time reducing the cost.
To these ends my invention consists, gen-= erally stated, in a lamp comprising a hollow glass stand having an outwardly flaring upper end portion and a shade adapted to rest upon the upper end of said flaring portion and extending outwardly beyond said point of support, together with means for supporting an electric, gas or other burner in said stand.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1' is a side elevation of my improved lamp;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section; Fig. 3 1s aview of the lamp stand partly broken away; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numeral 2 designates the stand which is preferably formed from glass by blowing the same in a suitable mold so that said lamp stand will be hollow as indicated in Fig. 2. The shape of the stand may be varied as desired according to the design -to be produced and as the mold for forming the same forms no part of my invention, it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate the same, it being sufficient to say that the stand may be blown in an ordinary paste mold, said mold .bemg formed to produce the outwardly flaring portion 3. This flaring portion 3 may be provided with the straight or vertical ed eportion 4, and the shade 5 of any suita le design is supported directly upon the edge portion 4 of the flaring portion 3 of the stand. The shade 5 may be formed with a Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1911. Serial No. 809,823.
Patented Oct. 1; 1912.
Shoulder 6 which rests on'theedge port-ion 4 and in this way the shade is. firmly supported and held against displacement. Where my improved lamp is to be used in connection with an electric burner, the socket 7 is supported by the fingers 8 which rest upon the inner face of the flaring portion 3 at the lower end thereof and connected tothe socket is the cord 9 which.
passes down through the hollow stand and out through the opening 1Q. The incandescent bulb 11 is inserted. in the socket 7 and extends up within the flaring portionglass, as the bulbis entirely concealed to gether with'the socket and cord, and as the shade is supported directly on the lamp stand,'no brass rings or fittings are required to support the shade. The lamp when lighted gives a .very rich, handsome appeararice, and by the fact that no supporting bracket engages the lower edge of the shade, the shade maybe scalloped as at 12, or be given any other decorative design.
What I claim is:
1. A lamp comprising a hollow glass stand having an outwardly flaring portio'n formed integrally therewith and a shade supported directly on said flaring portion extending outwardly beyond said point of support.
2. 'A lamp comprising a stand having a flaring upper end portion, and a shade having a shoulder on its inner face with which the upper end of said stand engages.
- In testimony whereof, 'I the said GEORGE F. VVEHR, have hereunto set my hand.
. GEORGE"F. WEHR. Witnesses:
