SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Application filed May 4, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN P.' BEATTY, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention is an improvement upon a former invention made by me and described and claimed in Letters Patent heretofore granted to me for an improvement in ventilators, dated February 28, 1871, and numbered 4,27 7 reissue, to which Reissued Letters Patent reference should be had in construing this specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View, looking into the interior of the hat, showing the corrugated ventilating-wire F F attached to the crown of the hat at the point where the crown meets the brim of the hat, and the sweatlining E attachedto the inner side of the ventilating-wire. Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, edge and side views, enlarged, of a piece of the corrugated ventilating-wire F F.

My present invention consists in constructing the corrugated or crimped wire which forms the ventilating-wire F, described in the Reissued Letters Patent above mentioned, of two or more pieces or layers of metal, F and F, Figs. 1 and 2, one of zinc and the other of copper, which pieces, placed side by side and crimped or corrugated in the same manner as the wire F of the Reissued Letters Patent, form the ventilator in the hat. The ventilator-wire, being thus formedof the two metals, copper and zinc, exercises a bene- 4o ficial galvanic effect, preventing or relieving headache or other pains in the head.

The ventilator-wire thus formed may be used at the front or back of the hat, or, as in the Reissued Letters Patent, may entirely encircle the 4 5 crown. It may also be made of any desired Width.

I do not claim the two metals in combination in the hat, generally; but

l. The corrugated or crimped wire ventilator for hats, formed of two or more pieces or layers of metal, one of zinc and one of copper, substantially as shown and described.

2. The ventilator or corrugated wire F F, formed of two pieces or layers of metal, one of copper and one of zinc, when attached to the sweat-lining, as a new article of manufacture.

3. The hat having its sweat-lining secured in place by a wire formed of two or more pieces or layers of metal, one of zinc and one of copper, arranged and attached in a zigzag 'form between its lower edge and the body of 65 the hat, and so as to leave the upper edge loose, substantially as shown and for the purpose de- JOHN P.
