Description

(No Model.)
T. S. HASKELL.
PAN 0R STOVE GOVEB. LIFTER.
Patentd June 12,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
THOMAS S. HASKELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAN OR STOVE-COVER LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 279,153, dated June 12, 1883,
Application filed November 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THoMAs S. HASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pan or Stove-Cover Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined dish and stove-coverv lifter, and is fully set forth in the accompanying drawings and following description.
In the drawings, Figure I is a top view of my improved tool. Fig. II is a side elevation of the invention employed as a pan or dish lifter. Fig. III is the same view of the device used as a stove-cover lifter, and Fig. IV is a detail plan view of one jaw.
B is a jaw prolonged from the handleH and rigid therewith, andprovided upon its jawsurface with transverse grooves or corrugations 1). Hinged upon the piece B at c is the opposing jaw-piece D, having upon its jawsurface the transverse groove (1. The part D is extended upon the other side of the hinge c to form a hook, C, which, extending below the jaw B, terminates in an end, h, adapted to catch in the hook-opening of a stove-cover, and sufficiently in advance of the jaws B D to approximate, as seen in Fig. II, to the inclined side of a pan, WV, grasped between said jaws. Also, prolonged from the jaw D, to be in convenient reach of the hand grasping the handle H, is the thumb-piece I.
. matically cause the jaws to hold with a force proportionate to the weight of the pan, so that the pan, no matter what its weight, is by the hook. G and jaws D B firmly held, to be conveniently moved. One of the grooves b in jaw B and groove (1 in jaw D adapt themselves to the wire rim of a certain class of pan, as shown in the drawings, and these grooves in the opposing jaw-surfaces sufficiently roughen them for an effective grip upon all classes of cooking utensils. To grasp a pan, the jaws are opened by means of the thumb-piece I, and when the rim is between said jaws the handle H is slightly lowered to bring the hook end h against the side of the pan to complete the adjustment of the tool for use.
When the hook C is used to lift astove-cover, the jaw D, bearing against jaw B, causes the hook O to be rigid with handle H.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The within-described dish or pan lifter, consisting of the handle H and rigid jaw B, in combination with the jaw D, hinged thereto to swing above jaw B, and provided with the extended bearing-arm C to swing below the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the j awsB D and arms 0, arranged and operating as shown and described, of the corresponding transverse grooves, d and b, in the j aw-surfaces, adapting the jaws to inclose a wire rim, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the handle H, jaw B, and arm 0, constructed and arranged substantially as shown, of the end 71, adapted to form a stove-cover hook.
It. F. HYDE, WM. H. CHAPIN.
