FIRE-ESCAPE.
sPEcIFicA'rIoN forming part of Letter 5 Patent No. 277,376, dated May 8,1883.
Application filed February 1 1883; (So model.)
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. STUcKEY, of Govington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of the combination, with a fire-escape adapted to be secured to the wall or any part of a building, of an electric appliance whereby the fire-escape may be released and put in position for use from the ground and from various parts of the buildmg.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyforming part of this specificacate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 shows my new and improved fireescape as it appears when applied to the build-' ing, both in folded and unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the fire-escape.
A represents a rope ladder, to the lower end of which is attached the reel 13, upon which the ladder may be wound. The upper end of the ladder is attached to the eyes or staples a a, secured in the wall of the building, within the box 0, which is also secured to the wall or any part, of the building, preferably immediately over the windows or on top of the roof, and which is adapted to inclose the reel and ladder when wound up, as shown in Fig. 2.
The floor or bottom 01 of the box 0 is made in-.
clined, as shown, and the ladder and reel are held in place in the box by the (1001' f, so that i when the door is released by the catch g the reel and ladder will force the door open and drop to position in front of the windows for use. The catch g is adapted to be raised for releasing the doorfby an electric appliance, consisting in this instance of the magnet h, armature 'i, and weight or hammer j, which is adapted, when the current of electricity to the magnets is broken, to drop upon the outer end of the catch, and thus raise its forward end and release the door f. The circuit-wires lo 70, attached to the magnets, may have suitable connections and cut-off keys at various places throughout the building and outside of the building, so that in case of fire the ladders may be let down in a moment of time, either from various places inside or outside of the house,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination, with a fire-escape adapted to be attached to the wall or any part of a building and locked in folded position, of an substantially as set forth.
2. The rope ladder A, reel B,and casing or box'G, in combination with the door f, catch latch, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
