FIRE-ESCAPE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIoHoLAs P. BARRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Masonville, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fire escapes and more particularly to that class of fire escapes that are collapsible.

An object of my invention is to provide a cheap and eflicient fire escape that will collapse into a small space.

Another object of my invention is to provide a collapsible fire escape in which the steps stand out from the building.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in View my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 shows my device in operation. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing a step in side elevation. Fig. 3 shows a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached step. I

In carrying my invention into practice I use lengths of chain 1 the right length for one step. The lengths 1 are held together by the eyes 2 of the step 3, which step is to be made of metal and is three sided as shown in the drawings. At the two corners are eyes 4: made by binding the material upon itself, this construction making a strong one piece step. These eyes 4: are adapted to receive the end link of a section of chain 5, the other end of said chains being fastened to the sections 1 in such manner that the step 3 is held at right angles to the sections 1, when the escape is suspended. The ends of the sections 1 are brought to- Specification of Letters Patent.

vgether at the top into a point 6 which is fastened by a bolt or other suitable means to the inside of the window. The bottom ends are loosely joined together. A box 7 may also be provided of such size that it will accommodate the whole ladder snugly.

As it may be seen the ladder or fire escape will be kept in the box 7 until needed. In case of fire it is pulled out of the box and dropped out of the window. The steps 3 will open and the chains 5 will hold them at right angles to the face of the building. One may then climb out on the ladder and descend safely to the ground. As the steps 3 extend out beyond the face of the building a sure foothold is easily secured upon them, thereby making it possible to make a quick and safe descent to the ground.

The cheapness and compactness of this fire escape will enable every window in a private house or hotel to have one long enough to reach to the ground or to the window below, thereby providing adequate means for the tenants to escape.

I desire it to be understood that slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention providing such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A flexible ladder comprising rungs, each formed of a single wire having an intermediate step portion and bent at the ends of said step portion to form loops, and rearwardly extending arms having eyes at their ends in combination with flexible members connected with said eyes and other flexible sections connecting the loops with the flexible members.
