J.H.S ELBY. BED RAIL SLAT LOOK.
No. 275,718. Patented Apr. 10, 1883.

UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. SELBY, OF ALBION, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN W. SKEAVINGTON,.OF SAME PLACE.
BED-RAlL-SLAT LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,718, dated April 10, 1883.
' Application filed January as, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. SELBY. a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Edwards and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rail-Slat Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bedsteads;,and it has for its object to provide for locking the slats between the side rails, so as to prevent the said rails from springing apart and the slats from dropping out, as more fully hereinafter specified. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of one of the side rails of a bedstead and one of the slats thereof, showing my improved locking device; Fig. 2, a detachedperspective view of a portion of the lockin g device; and Fig. 3 a detached perspective View 'of a portion of one of the slats, showing a part of the locking device attached thereto.
The letter Aindicates the side rail of a bed, which is provided with'the usual slat-seats, B, at proper intervals.
The letterO indicates a short section of wood, metal, or other material adapted to be secured 5 5 in the slat-seat and setting closely against the inner side of the rail. The said section, at its upper end, is provided with a beveled slot, D, into which is adapted to set the dovetailed tenon E at the end of an extension, F, ofmetal 21.0 or other material, at the end of the slat Gr, so as to securely interlock the parts of the bedstead.
The locking devices may be employed in connection with the central slat of the bed 5 alone or with any number of the slats, and it will be perceived that it will securely fasten the parts together and prevent the slats from becoming detached accidentally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the side rails of a bedstead, of the sections seated in the slatseats and provided with beveled slots, andthe 5 5 slats having extensions provided with dovetailed tenous adapted to look into the said beveled slots, substantially as and for the purposes specified. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES H. SELBY.
