UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MADISON L. JOHNSON, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
BASKET F OR BURlAL-CASKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,665, dated April 10, 1883.
. Application filed November 29, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MADISON L. JOHNSON, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baskets for Burial- Gases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists of an improved basket for burial-cases, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section, of a burial-case showing my improved basket or holder.
I construct the body A of the case with a seat, B, which is surrounded by a fiange, 0, and adapt the lid- D to be set within the flange. With this construction a trough, E, is formed around the lid, into which cement is to be poured to form an air-tight joint between the parts. The lid D is to be cast with recesses F to serve as handles in lifting the same to and from its place.
To protect the glass from being injured by contact with external objects, I provide a metal holder or basket, Gr, consisting of one or more longitudinally-arrau ged rods H and transverse rods I, which are bent up from the bottom of the coffin and secured to a rod, J, which is bent around the body of the coflin from end to end. The ends of the rods H and I. are bent over the rod J from the inside, and said rods H and I are formed with ofisets K at their curves L, which serve to hold the coffin steadily in position without its being in contact with the basket above said offsets. With this construction the basket will serve to hold the coffin securely in position and protect it from contact with external objects without binding, and thereby interfering with the expansible character of the glass.
It is designed that the glass shall be lined and covered with cloth or other suitable material.
l/Vhat I claim as new is- The improved basket for burial-cases, con sisting of the rods H and I, having offsets K at their curves, and the rod J, adapted to form, in combination therewith, a flaring rim, which shall stand out from the sides and ends of the burial-case, substantially as specified.
M. L. JOHNSON.
