BURIAL-CASKET.
Application filed January 20, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. WAL- LACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Buchtel, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burial caskets, and has for its principal object to provide a casket of semi-porcelain, china, concrete or similar material which is light in construction and which is strong and durable.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a casket of such character which will be constructed in such manner that a simple form of bracket members may be mounted in the transverse reinforcing ribs to support handle rods upon either side of the body and top of the casket.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a casket constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the body of the casket which is of any desired form and which is constructed from any suitable material, such as semi-porcelain, china, concrete or the like. This body, as shown, is substantially rectangular in shape and is open at its top, the upper edges thereof being extended laterally outwardly to provide flanges 2 which have grooves 3 formed in their upper faces.
The cover is indicated at 4 which is of the same size and shape as the body 1 with the exception that the top thereof is arched. This cover is open upon its bottom and the lower edges thereof are extended outwardly laterally, as at 5, to provide flanges which have a rib 6 formed on their under faces for engagement in the grooves 3. An air tight joint is thus provided between the Specification of Letters Patent.

body and cover, and after the cover has been arranged upon the body it may be sealed in any suitable manner.
Spaced vertically extendingribs or reinforcing elements 7 are formed upon the body 1 upon the sides and ends thereof. Similar ribs are also formed upon the sides and ends of the cover 4, the side ribs of the cover being extended over the arched upper Wall thereof as is clearly illustrated in the drawings. These ribs upon the arched upper wall of the cover are provided with transversely extending openings 8 through which straps may be passed for lowering the casket into a grave.
As clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings the upper and lower faces of the flanges 5 and 2 respectively, are curved so that when the cover is placed upon the body a horizontally extending strengthening rib is formed which extends entirely around the casket.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a casket which may be constructed very lightly and which will be strong and durable in use, and while I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, except for such limitations as the claim may impart.
I claim:
A casket comprising a body and a top,
said top having reinforcing ribs formed thereon, said ribs being provided with bracket-accommodating openings, U-shaped bracket members engaged centrally through said openings, and handle rods extended through the parallel ends of said bracket members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. WALLACE,
Witnesses WILLIAM TUNEY, CHARLES Woons.
