Description
A. TUFTSn Signal Lantern No. 27,485. Patented March 13, 1860.
Wz'Zvm96566 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS TUFTS, OF MALDEN. MASSACHUSETTS.
LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,485, dated March 18, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUsrUs Torre, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The figures of the accompanying plate of drawings represent my improvements.
Figure 1 is a central, vertical section of my improved lantern. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same taken in the plane of the line A B Fig. 1.
The kind of lantern upon which my improvements are made are those consisting of a cylinder of glass formed with a series of zones or belts extending horizontally around the exterior of the lantern, their object being to produce the effect of elongating the light vertically.
My improvement-s consist in constructing a lantern not only with a series of horizontal belts on the exterior of the glass cylinder but also with a series of vertical refracting ribs on the interior of the lantern, whereby the lights produced will not only be elongated but their number will be apparently doubled, producing for instance, four lights where there are but two flames or burners, the great advantage of which in adding to the quantity of light and the diminution in expense, will be manifest.
a a a in the drawings represent the cylinder of a lantern having formed on its exterior, beveled zones or belts b b, &c., extending horizontally around the same and vertical beveled ribs (Z (Z, &c., on the inside of the same as shown in the drawings.
6 e is the lamp supplied with any desired number of burners By this arrangement while the lights produced are elongated they will also be apparently doubled in number.
Having thus described my improvements I shall state my claim as follows:
hat I claim as my invention and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent is,
In a lantern the combination of a series of horizontal retracting zones or belts formed 011 the exterior of the lantern with a series of vertical ribs, formed on the interior thereof, substantially as described, whereby the lights are both multiplied and elongated, as set forth.
