Be it known that I, RICHARD JTARRETT, of Portland, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented a new and I'nproved Window-Screen, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improvement in window-screens; and it consists in the combination and arrangeuient'of parts. substantially -as hereinafter more fully set forth.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe inside of a window with my improved screen attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation ot' the window. Fig.3 is a longitudinal section of the roller, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation ot' one ol the brackets for attaching the roller.

I tix a tin or other roller, ct, having a suitable torsion spring' or springs; b, in the windowframe, between the jainbs c and over the sill d, outside ofthe lower sash and under the upper one, with a wire or other screen, e, attached to and coiled on it, and also attached to the-hottom raihf, of the lower sash, so that when the s ish is raised it wil-l unroll the screen and stretch it along the space opened by raising' the sash with the edges in contact with the stoprails t, thus protecting' the window while open as well as it' the screen were permanentl)l fixed, and when the sash is shut down the spring coils the screen on the roller, where it is stowed, so that the window is as if no screen were attached, so far as its uses are concerned. I may also attach a screen to the upper sash in like manner, to be stretched when the sash is pulled down.

The roller consists of the outside case, a, to which the screen is attached, and two shorter inside tubes, k, eaeh containing` a shaft, IL, and a torsion-spring, b. The springs are attached at one end to the tubes k land at the other ends to the shafts h, said shafts passing through theinner ends of the tubes and secured by a piu g. The covers l ofthe outer ends of tubes b are fitted on the shafts loosely until the outer tube, (t, is eut to the right length for the window to which it is to be applied. Then tubes k areiuserted, with heads l about half an inch inside ot' the ends ol' a, when said heads l are soldered fast to a, which makes the roller complete, except that one end of said tube is to be notched at u for passing the socket m when putting the roller in its bearings in brackets t' attached to thejambs c; and the socketis also slotted at o for entering the end of the shaft. The sockets are ot angular form, and the ends of' the shaft.oorrespomlingly shaped to resist the torsion of the springs. When the roller iS putin place it is turned a few times with the screen before the latter is att-ached to the sash to put the springs in tension. A piece, a, is attached to the sash for extending outside of the stop-rails t to receive the screen.

Outside of the roller is a plate. 1J, forming part of an inclosing cas-e, which, together with another plate. q, attached to the rail f, com# pletely incloses the roller when the sash is down to protect it from the weather and conceal it. from View.

This screen attachment is to be so applied that it can be removed readily'when not required for use.
