iJNiTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMONS B. OORBY, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
REFRIGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,393, dated January 9,1883.
Application filed May 25, 1882.
[ lation of the cooling-chamber. The cooling- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMoNs B. OoRBY, of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in refrigerators for the storing and preservation of meats, vegetables, and other perishable articles; and it has for its objects to provide an ice box or holder to be employed in connection with a refrigerator, whereby the water of the melting ice may be retained, as well as the ice, in the upper part of the refrigerator and fully utilized for cooling the articles in a chamber below, for cooling water for domestic or other purposes, and by means of which the cooling-chamber may be ventilated to prevent the accumulation of injurious and objectionable gases and vapors therein, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the ice box or holder detached, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of a refrigerator, showing the ice box or holder applied thereto.
The letter A indicates a rectangular box or holder constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material, and of any desired dimensions, and B a rectangular box or chamber forming the cooling-compartment of the refrigerator. The said box or holder A, at its sides, is formed with horizontal rims O, having downwardlyextending' flanges D, by means of which it can be supported in the upper part of the box or chamber B, the rims G resting; upon the upper edges of the before-mentioned box or chamber B. A space, E, is left between the Walls of the two boxes A and B, and the rims are perforated at intervals to permit of proper venti- (No model.)
chamber may be provided with suitable doors, by means of which access may be had to the interior. The ice box or holder is provided with a partition, F. forming a receptacle, G, for water for domestic purposes, and is formed with an inclined bottom, as indicated, in order to allow any condensed water on the under side to drip oii' at one side and not fall on the articles in the cooling-chamber.
The ice box or holders may be provided with suitable pipes and cocks to draw off the water 'as may be required.
WVhen desired, salt may be employed in connection with the ice to increase the refrigerating qualities of the apparatus.
It will be seen that as constructed the water resulting from the melted or melting ice will be held in the upper part of the refrigerator until it is fully utilized for cooling purposes, after which it may be drawn off and fresh ice inserted. Being located in the upper part of the refrigerator, the body of ice and cold water are most effectively utilized for cooling the parts of the refrigerator below.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the refrigerator, the icebox constructed with a perforated rim adapted to set upon the top of the refrigerator, the said box being formed with an inclined bottom to shed condensed moisture at one side, and 'provided with a partition near its deeper side to form a receptacle for pure water, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature,
