United States Patent 7 SLIP Sylvia Roodner, Bronx, N. Y.
Application March 12, 1953, Serial No. 341,927
' sciaims. (Cl. 2-73 This invention relates to undergarments and, more particularly, to a new and improved slip. v
A primary object of the invention is the provision of a slip designed and arranged in such a manner as to conform closely to the body of the wearer, particularly. in the region of the waistline and hips, and to mould and support the respective portions of the body in the manner of a corset but without possessing excessive weight and confining characteristics.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a slip of the character indicated which is lightwveight, durable in construction, simple and inexpensive to manufacture and which is yet designed in such a manner as to have pronounced slenderizing eflfect when worn;
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a slip designed and arranged in such a manner as to; be adapted for use with evening wear and to be capable of conforming to the body either with or without the use of shoulder straps.
The foregoing objects as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates preferred embodiments of the invention, and wherein-z Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a slip incorporating the features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the slip;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the slip;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l;
fFig. 5 is a front elevational view of a modified form 0 slip;
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of an additional mod ification',
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevation of the modification of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the modification of Figs. 6 and 7;
Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on line 99 of Fig. 6.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing, the improved slip comprises a bodice section 10 and a depending skirt section 11 defining a waistline W for the slip.
The body of the slip includes a front panel 12, a pair of side panels 13 extending about the rear of the garment and interconnected along a medial line of stitching at the back-of the slip, as shown at 14 (see Fig. 2), said side panels being connected to said front panel by means of lines of stitching 9.
As clearly shown in Fig. 1, front panel 12 is cut so as to define, in the bodice section of the slip, a relatively narrow upper portion 12a having concavely cut edges 12b substantially conforming to the inner outline of the bust of the wearer. Bust sections 15 are cut with convex edges conforming to concave edges 12b of front panel 12 and with lateral edges 15a substantially in alignment with the upper portions of the side edges of said front panel. Triangular, gusset-like, insert panels 16 are provided, each of which defines an apex 160 at the lower end thereof preferably disposed substantially below the waistline W of the slip, and preferably about 9 inches below the waistline.
In order to accommodate the insert panels 16, side panels 13 are formed with upwardly and rearwardly divergent edges 13a terminating medially at the sides of the slip in the region of the armpit, as best seen in Fig. 3. Rear panel 17 is formed with relatively short I 2,701,363 Patented Feb.. 8, 1955 1' line of stitching 14.
' Shoulder straps 18 are suitably secured to the front and rear of bodice section 10 to serve for supporting the slip in the usual manner.
By reason of the construction and arrangement of panels in the described embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, and particularly because of the formation of triangular insert panels 16 defining lower apices 16a disposed substantially below the waistline W and the interrelationship between said insert panels with the remaining panels of the slip, distinctive sgpptlirting and form-fitting properties are impartedto t e sip.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification of the invention similar to the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 4 except for the formation of the front panel 12'. For purposes of clarity and simplicity the remaining panels and respective panel edges of Fig. 5 are referred to with prime numerals corresponding to the analogous panels of the initial embodiment. Front panel 12' does not extend the full length of the slip, as in the initially described embodiment of the invention, but is formed with downwardly convergent edges 12's substantially in alignment with the lateral edges 16'b of triangular insert panels 16'. Furthermore, in order to complete the body of the slip, side panels 13' are formed with upwardly divergent edges 13a conforming to edges 12's and 16'b of panels 12 and 16' respectively. Side panels 13' are further formed with substantially vertical edges in the lower portions thereof continuous with the respective divergent edges 13'a and interconnected along a medial line of stitching 19 at the front of the slip.
Figs. 6 to 9 illustrate a further modification of the invention similar to the initially described embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 and wherein respective panels analogous to those of the initial embodiment are indicated with double primed reference numerals. Triangular insert panels 20 are prvoided and are preferably made from elastic woven puckered fabric. The upper and inner marginal edge of the slip has secured therealong an elastic tape 21 suitably secured to the slip as by means of a line of stitching 22 (see Fig. 8). Detachable shoulder straps 23 are provided, said straps being engageable with front and rear anchor straps 24 and 24a respectively by means of hook members 25 defining engaging lugs 25a. Shoulder straps 23 may be further provided with auxiliary lateral supporting straps 23a for effectively supporting the slip.
One of the elastic triangular insert panels 20 may be provided along its lateral edge with an upwardly and rearwardly extending slide fastener 27 having one of its fastener tapes secured along the lateral edge of said insert panel and its other fastener tape secured along the respective aligned edges 13"a and 17"a of side panel 13" and rear panel 17" respectively.
By reason of the construction and arrangement of the embodiment of Figs. 6 to 9 a slip is provided which has all the advantages inherent in the construction of the initially described embodiment and which, in addition may be worn either with or without the shoulder straps 23. For wear with low decolletage evening gowns, straps 23 may be readily detached and the slip will retain its moulding and form-fitting characteristics as the combincd result of the construction, formation and operative interrelationship of the elastic, triangular insert panels 20, elastic tape 21, detachable shoulder straps 23 and slide fastener 27.
Since certain additional modifications may be made in the slip garment of the present invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
l. A slip comprising a front panel extending both above and below the waistline of the slip, a pair of inner b'odice panels joined to the lateral edges of the front panel above the waistline of the slip, a pair of side'panels joined to the lateral edges of the front panel below the waistline and extending above the waistline, said side panels having the lower adjacent edges thereof, joined together and having the upper adjacent edges thereof diverging from each other, a rear panel having downwardly convergent edges interposed between said divergent edges and connected therewith and with the upper lateral margins of said rear panel extending above the upper ends of the side panels, and a pair of approximately triangular outer'insert bodice-panels respectively interposed between the front panel and the side panels andextending above and below the waistline, the inner edges of said outer bodice panels beingrespectively connected to the lateral edges of the front panel below said waistline and to the outer lateral edges of said inner bodice panels above said waistline, the outer lateral edges of said outer bodice panels being respectively connected to the respective inner edges of said side panels, said rear panel having the upper lateral edges thereof above the side panels secured directly to the upper outer lateral edges of the outer bodice panels.
2. A slip in accordance with claim 1, said outer bodice panels being formed from elastic Woven fabric, said slip being provided with detachable straps.
3. A slip in accordance with claim 1, said outer bodice panels being formed from elastic woven fabric, said slip being provided with detachable shoulder straps, one of said outer bodice panels being secured to the alined inner edge of said side panel and lateral edge of said rear panel by means of aslide fastener.
