Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
J-OSIAH BETTIS, OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,002, dated January 2, i883.
Application filed August 19, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
VBe it known that I, JOSIAH BETTIS, of New Albany, in the county ot' Floyd, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this` specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car-brakes; and it has for its object to provide a shifting brake-shaft which may be adjusted to operate i'n a vertical or horizontal position, so as to permit the brakes to be operated from the platform of the car or from either side ot the same, as more fully hereinafter speeitied.` These objects I accomplish by the ine-ans illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front elevatlon illus- -trating my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of my improved brake mechanism.
The letter A indicates a portion ofthe platforxn o'r end ot' a car, to the lower part ot' which is secured a bracket or hanger, B,in any snitable manner. The said bracket is provided with an elliptical or vertically-elongated bearing, C, for the shaft D, at the lower end of the sleeve E,- the shaft beingjournaled in said bearing and held therein by means of a lip Vat its rear. In the sleeve E is journaled the segmental bracket secured to the front of the car or platform. This bracket is recessed or notched immediately over the hanger B, and the notch or recess en gages the bracket H when the brake-shaft is in a vertical position and holds it. The said bracketH is slotted at M, and is adapted to slide on the segmental bracket, so as to permit the brakelshaft to be thrown into a horizontal or nearly-horizontal position when desired. By reason ot the slight vertical play of the shaft I) in its elliptical bearing the bracket Il' is adapted to be lifted in or outof the recessin the segmental bracket.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description, as it is evident that the brakeshaf't may be used either in a vertical or horizontal position, or in any position between a vertical and horizontal position.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with a car, ofthe bracket or hanger having an elliptical bearing, the sleeve having a shaft journaled therein, the brake-shaftjournaled in the sleeve, `the brackf et secured to said sleeve, and the notched segmental bracket, the whole arranged so that the brake-shaft may be thrown into a vertical orhorizontalposition, substantiallyassetforth.
2. The combination, with theswiveledsleeve, of the brake-shaft journaled therein and provided with a ratchet-wheel, and the engaging pawl swiveled to the bracket at thenpper part of the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof l aflix my signature, in
presence ot* two witnesses, this 241th day of Witnesses:
JOSEPH DOHEETY, AMos MINETT.
