nirnn HOMER L. PHELPS, OF ATHENS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE D. MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,797, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed October 4, 1888.
T ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER L. PHELPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, havcinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Brakes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apljmrtaiusto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the brake-shaft turned. Fig. 3 a eross-seetion.
This invention relates to improvements in brakes for street-railway cars; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object to provide an attachment to the crank-shaft whereby a halfrevoluti0n of brake.
Referring to the drawin A designates the crank; B, the crankshaft, designed to be secured to the car in the usual manner; and C is an arm ertendingat rightangles therefrom near its lower end.
The arm C may be integral with the crankshaft; but in that construction should the arm be broken the entire crank-shaft and arm must be replaced by a new one. Therefore I prefer to construct it as shown in the drawings, in which the arm 0 is enlarged at one end, at a, through which enlarged portion the opening Z) is provided, through which bolt, I), placed transversely through the enlarged portion and the crank-shaft. By removing this bolt 0 the arm may be taken off and a new one placed thereon should occasion require. The brakechain I) engages the rod E at one end, and at its other end is provided the crank-shaft extends and is secured by a presence of two witnesses.
the crank will be sufficient to operate the Serial No. 287,178. (No model.)
with an eyebolt, E, which is pivotal, and for the purpose of adjustment may be placed in either of the series of openings d in the arm.
The arm 0 normally stands toward the cen- 5o t er of the car, and there should be butvery little slack in the chain D, so that when the arm is turned in a direction directly opposite its normal position the chain will bear upon the spindle portion G of the crank-shaft and I the brake-shoes will be drawn tightly against the wheels.
The spindle portion G is gradually narrowed in waist form below the level of the eye of the bolt F, and beyond the narrowed 6o portion I is enlarged again, forming a terminal swell, J, so that when the shaft is turn ed around and the chain engages the spindle it will wind thereon downward or away from the eyeboltand will not engage the latter. In this manner the slack of both brake and chain is quickly taken up, while the leverage required for a powerful application of the brake-shoes is provided.
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with the crank-shaft having a narrowed spindle at its lower end, of the arm standing atright angles thereto above said spindle and removably secured by a bolt passing through said arm and shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the crank-shaft having a winding-spindle at its lower end, the chain, and the brake-rod, of the removable 8o arm seated on said shaft above the spindle, and having the series of adjusting-openings, and having the enlarged portion provided with a perforation, and the transverse fastening-bolt, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in HOMER L. PHELPS.
\xitnesses:
GEO. D. lllILLEB, J: J. CLEAVELAND.
