L. BARNUM.
THILL GULTIVATOR.
No. 269,376. Patented De0.19, 18821 Walhinglnn. n c
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. BARNUM, or WILSON, NEW YORK.
THlLL-CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,376, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed September 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID L. BARNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVilson, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in one-horse thill-cultivators; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will he hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a plan and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
The machine consists of a. wooden frame of side bars and cross-bars. The side frames, A A, and front cross-bar, A, are secured together and made rigid by means of iron angle-plates or castings U, which fit on their under sides, where they come together and are bolted to said side pieces and bar, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. To the outer sides of the side bars. A A, are bolted the thills B B.
D D represent the usual handles for guiding the machine, which are pivoted to the side bars at the front of the cultivator at the points a a. Slotted castings or uprights E E are bolted to the. side bars, A A, at the rear of the machine. By means of the bolts or lugs b b on the handles 1) D, which lit in the slots in the uprights E E, the handles can be raised or lowered, as desired.
The device has three plows, one of which is behind and in a line'passing between the forward and outer ones. The plow-standards F F are secured to the main frame by means of rods 0 0, extending from and through the standards to and through the front cross bar, A, and bolted thereto, and rods or eyebolts cl d, which pass up through the standards and through slots in the cross piece A and are secured to the same by nuts, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear plow-standard, F, is likewise secured to a projecting piece or beam, A which is bolted to the cross-piece A and to the front cross-bar, A, by means of rods 0 and d, as shown. The rods d d have eyes or loops at their ends which fit around the rods 0 c at the points where they meet and are bolted to the standards F F. The slotted cross-piece A rests on and is secured to two cross-bars, A which are bolted to the under sides of the side bars, A A.
To the lower ends of the plow-standards are fastened castings, to which are secured the steel teeth or shovelsff. By reversing the shovels the cultivator may be made to throw in or out, as desired. (See Fig. 3.)
The plow standards F F are adjustable on the cross-piece A by means of the slots therein, thus permitting them to be placed nearer or farther apart, as desired.
Bolt-holes e e are so arranged in the side frames, A A, that the thills B B may be continued on a straight line with the sides or thrown upward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus regulating the pitch of the cultivator, as well as adapting it to the size or height of the horse.
A draw hook, g, is attached to the under side of the front cross-bar, A, for attachment of a single-tree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a thill-cultivator, the combination of the side pieces, A, cross-pieces A A A", adj ustable thills B, rearward-projecting piece A adjustable plow-standards F F, stationary plowstandard .F, and bolts d d, all constructed and combined as and for the purpose described.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID L. BARNUM.
