Description

T. W. CARROLL.
Self Lighting Lamps. y
No. 26,884. Patentedllany 24, `1860.
UNITED sTATEs IPATENT oEEIoE.
THOMAS W. CARROLL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SELF-LIGHTING LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,884, dated January 24, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. CARROLL, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improv-ed Mechanical Arrangement for Igniting the Fuses of Self-Lighting Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of ref ercnce marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a lever and notched slide in substitution for the ratchet wheel and hook as set forth in the specification of Leopold Thomas and Joseph rlhomas, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, and to whom Letters Patent were granted, No. 23,203, and bearing date March Sth, 1859; and which substitution I claim to be an improvement on their method, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specificatie-n, in which- Figure l is a vertical section, .F ig. Q a side view, and Fig. 3 an end or edge view, of. a lamp substantially the sam-e as that of Leopold and Joseph Thomas patented as above, but with my improvement attached.
The letters refer to the same parts in the different views as well as to the details Nos. 4- and 5 and 6.
A A A is a lever, or rather a pair of lelvers, connected at the points F F Cr, the
middle point being a roller.
B B B is a slide notched on its `edge for the purpose of taking hold of the fuse and to thereby feed or push it forward when the lamp is to be lighted, which operation is as follows: On pressing down the lever A in the direction of the arrow the point F is brought in contact with the projecting part of the slide B, and of course the slide is caused to descend, which it is enabled to do, as there is no pressure now acting against it and the fuse is held by the spring H H. rThis action has now brought the upper projection of the slide B in a position to be acted upon by the roller G, which roller being now in contact with the upper projec tion of the slide B, on the motion being reversed and the lever A moved upward, the slide B is thrust in against the fuse and at the same time upward, carrying a portion of the fuse up with it, while at the same time the upper and serrated end of the lever A is moved forward,.igniting the fuse by friction.
Nos. 4 and 5 and G of these drawings are representations of the lever A, the slide B, and the fuse holder C in detail and need not be described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The application of the lever and slide as herein set forth.
THOS. lV. CARROLL. lVitnesses JOHN ODONNELL, CHARLES H. KREAMER.
