UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH SAhTDVOS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-CLEANING CHAIR.
'SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 268,132, dated November 28, 1882. Application filed August 31.18821 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LFRIEDRIOH SANDvos, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Cleaning Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved chair for cleaning the windows of hotels, apartment, tenement, and other houses, the chair being constructed in such a manner that it may be readily folded together for being stowed away after use, and applied securely to the window-sill and casing for use, so as to form a strong and reliable support for cleaning the same from the outside.
The invention consists of two rectangular main stays, connected at the ends by pivoted transverse pieces and provided with fixed side guard-frames, and of a platform and an end guard-frame, of which the formeris hinged to an intermediate end strip, that is again hinged to the end piece of the supporting main stays, while the end guard-frame is locked to the side guard-frames by suitable fastening devices. The rectangular main stays are secured by adjustable clamp-pieces to the window-sills. By throwing up the hinged platform against the end guard-frame the main stays and side frames may be swung laterally on the pivoted end pieces, one over the other, after which the platform and end guard-frame is folded over the main stays, so that the whole device takes up but avery small space and can be conveniently stored away.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure] represents a-perspective view of myim proved chair for cleaning windows, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2represents a sectional side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Figs. 4 and 5 a side view and an end view, of the device, shown as folded up when not in use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A in the drawings represent two rectangular main stays, each of which is constructed of two vertical pieces, a a, and two horizontal pieces, a, that are rigidly connected at their intersecting portions. The two main stays A Aare connected at their upper ends by a transverse rod,A,which is pivoted thereto, and the outer ends of the horizontal pieces a a are connected by a transverse piece, A pivoted thereto. A third transverse piece, A is hinged to the horizontal pieces a a, near the points of intersection with the vertical pieces a a. The horizontal arms a a of the main stays A A are provided at both sides with fixed side guardframes, B B, and at their under side with short slotted clamp-pieces G, secured by fasteningbolts 1), nearer to or farther from the vertical pieces a a, so as to serve, together with the lower ends of the vertical pieces a a, for rigidly attaching the main stays A A to the window-sill. The clamp-pieces 0 form thus, in connection with the upper transverse piece, A, a reliable support for the main stays on the window-sill and window-casing without any danger of getting loose or detached therefrom. An intermediate strip, D, is pivoted to the upper part of the pivoted end piece, A to the end piece being again hinged a platform, E, that can be thrown down over the horizontal stays aa ,so as to rest thereon between the fixed side guardframes, B B. An end guard-frame, B,is hinged to the platform E, and provided at the upper end with looking devices d cl, whereby it may be securely fastened to the side guard-frames, B B.
When the platform is placed in position on the horizontal pieces of the main stays A A and the end guard-frame locked to the fixed side frames the device, after being fastened to the window-sill and window casing by the clamp-pieces and upper end piece, is ready for use for cleaning the window from the outside. When it is desired to remove the same, after use, from the window the platform is first thrown up into vertical position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, against the end guard-frame, B, together with the intermediate strip, D, so that platform and intermediate strip clear the side frames, B. The main stays A A are then lifted clear of the sills and swung laterally on the pivots and hinges of the transverse pieces A A A until the stays and side frames fold one upon the other, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, after which the platform and end guard-frame are thrown over the folded main stays and side guard-frames, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the
Having thus described my invention. I claim 3. The combination of rectan gular main stays as new anddesire to secureby LettersPatent- 1. A chair or device for cleaning windows, consisting of rectangular main stays A A, connected by transverse pieces A A A fixed side guard-frames, B B, hinged platform E, end guard-frame, B, hinged to the platform, looking devices d d, for connecting the side and end guard-frames, and means 0 O, for clamping the main stays to the window-sill, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A window-cleaning chair composed of rectangular main stays A A,connected by tran sverse pivoted end pieces, A A and hinged intermediate piece, A fixed side guard-frames, B B, attached to the horizontal arms of the main stays, hinged intermediate strip, D, hinged platform E, hinged end guard-frame, B, means (1 d, for locking the side and end guard-frames, and adjustable clam p-pieces G G of the main stays, substantially as specified.
AA, provided with fixed side guard-frames, B B, and connected by pivoted transverse pieces A A and hinged intermediate piece, A ,with intermediate strip, D, hinged to the end strip, A platform E, hinged to strip D, and end guard-frame, B, hinged to platform E, the main stays and side guardframes being adapted to fold upon each other, and the platform and end guard-frame over the folded main stays, substantially as set forth.
1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
