Patented June 8., 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFICE 2,680,534 HINGE FOR GRAIN DRILL HOPPERS Ronald E. Penfold, Aldershot, IOntario, Canada,
assignor to International Harvester Company,
a corporation of New Jersey Application February 13, 1953, Serial No.
6 Claims.
passed through an opening in the wall of the box. This construction provided a hinge and also prevented relative displacement between the main part of the hopper This construction had the disadvantage that it allowed moisture to enter the Fig. 1 is a schematic View partly in section of one end of a grain drill hopper incorporating the features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the hinge construction without the hinge cover manner in which grain is deposited formed at the edge of the box lid;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in section of the in the loop Near the upper ends of the side walls of the hopper, these walls slant inwardly to probeads I9 entire length of the box.
There is also provided at the upper end of wall I4,
to provide a socket 2i.
The lid I6 has the edge thereof adjacent the the main body of the hopper, bent to however,
the pocket 2l' and forms a lump between the lid and the hinge member 2l when the lid is closed. This makes closure difficult and results in distortion of the lid. In order to avoid this diinculty applicant provides a hinge cover or guard designated by the numeral 23 having a shank portion 2S secured to the lid by one or more bolts 39 and having a projecting portion 3l extending into the pocket 2'! and iilling the space between the lid lli and the arcuate portion 2S or the hinge 1 member 2l.
The guard 28 also has an arcuate portion 32 shaped to t over and spaced slightly from the portion 23 of the hinge member 2e. There are likewise provided at opposite ends o the guard 23 and extending radially therefrom to overlap the sides of the hinge member 2 l, spaced anges 33. These flanges are engageable with the sides oi the hinge member 2l throughout the range of swinging the movement of the lid I6 relative ber secured to the inner surface oi one wall of the c hopper having an arcuate portion spaced from and concentric with a portion or the bead at the end of said wall to form a socket, a lid adapted to cover the opening in the hopper having one edge curved downwardly and inwardly to form a loop pocket and terminating in an arcuate portion adapted to be received in said socket to provide a hinge, and a hinge cover member adapted to prevent depositing of grain between the lid and the hinge member comprising a part secured to the inner surface of the lid andan arcuate portion complementary to and covering the arcuate portion of said hinge member.
2. In a hopper for grain drills and the like wherein elongated terminate at their upper ends in rolled beads opening, a hinge member secured to the inner surface of one wall of the hopper having an arcuate portion spaced from and concentric with a portion of the bead at the end of said wall to form a socket, a lid adapted to cover the opening in the hopper having one edge curved downwardly and inwardly to form a loop pocket and terminating in an arcuate portion adapted to provide a hinge, and a hinge cover member adapted to prevent depositing of grain between the lid and the hinge member comprising a part secured to the inner surface of the lid and an arcuate portion complementary the arcuate portion of said hinge member and a projecting portion receivable in said loop.
3. In a hopper for grain drills and the like wherein elongated generally vertical side walls terminate at their upper ends in rolled beads spaced to form the hopper opening, a hinge member secured to the inner surface oi one wall of generally vertical side walls to be received in said socket to and covering provide a hinge,
the hopper having an arcuate portion spaced from and concentric with a portion of the bead at the end of said wall to form a socket, a lid adapted to cover the opening in the hopper having one edge curved downwardly and inwardly to form a loop pocket and terminating in an arcuate portion adapted to be received in said socket to and a hinge cover member adapted to prevent depositing of 'grain between the lid and the hinge member comprising a part secured to the inner surface of the lid and an arcuate portion complementary to and covering the arcuate portion of said hinge member, a projecting portion receivable in said loop, and spaced nanges projecting radially from the arcuate portion of said hinge cover and engageable with opposite ends of said hinge member to prevent axial displacement of the lid with respect to the hopper.
4. In a hopper for grain drills and the like wherein elongated generally vertical side walls terminate at their upper ends in rolled beads spaced to `form the hopper opening, a hinge member secured to the inner surface oi one wall of the hopper having an arcuate portion spaced from and concentric with a portion of the bead at the end of said wall to form a socket, a lid adapted to cover the opening in the hopper having one edge curved downwardly and inwardly to form a loop pocket and terminating in an arcuate portion adapted to be received in said socket to provide a hinge, and a hinge cover member adapted to prevent depositing of grain between the lid and the hinge member comprising a part secured to the inner surface of the lid and an arcuate portion complementary to and covering the arcuate portion of said hinge member, spaced anges projecting radially from the arcuate portion of said hinge cover and engageable with opposite ends of said hinge member to prevent axial displacement or the lid with respect to the hopper and an extension of the arcuate portion receivable in said loop.
5. In a hopper for grain drills and the likehaving generally vertically extending side walls one of which has its upper edge rolled to form a bead, a hinge member secured to the inner surface or said wall adjacent the bead and having an arcuate portion spaced from and concentric with a portion oi the bead to form a socket, a lid for the hopper having one edge curved downwardly and inwardly to form a loop and terminating in an arcuate portion adapted to be received in said socket to provide a hinge, and a guard member secured to the lid, said guard member having a projection receivable in said loop pocket to prevent the deposition of grain therein and an arcuate portion conforming to the shape of and partly covering said hinge member.
6. The invention set forth in claim 5, wherein the arcuate portion of the guard member is provided with flanges engageable with the ends of the hinge member to prevent axial displacement of the lid.
