The purpose of this invention is to provide a p 'atient carrying hoist in which a patient may be'raised by a small foot pedal actuated hydraulic pump and in which the platform may be tilted about the center to raise and lower either end.
Various devices have been provided for han dling invalids and patients, and for removing patients from hospital beds but itis diiicult for anurse to move the patient from the bed to the platform of the hoist or carriage. With /this thought in mind this inventionv contemplates a platform, formed with spaced straps extended acrossside bars of a'rectangular shaped frame, pivotally supported at the center from base elements with telescoping posts and in which elevataing means is provided in combination with thetheplatform.
The object of this invention is, thereforefto providemeans for forming an elevatorforbed patients in which a patient carrying platform base elements for extending the posts to elevate thereof may be extended under a. patient on Va bed and in which the platform is pivotally mountnigh.
Another object of the invention is to provide abed patient elevator upon which a patientniay be placed by a nurse without discomfort to the ed whereby itmay be elevated with `either end patient. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a bed patient elevator that is elevated by a foot pedal actuated hydraulic pump.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the bed patient elevator of this invention includes a platform formed with spaced straps it extended across side bars II and I2, telescoping posts formed with outer tubes I3 and i4 and inner tubes I and I6, respectively and the posts are supported on abase having side'arms IlV and I8 connectedby across tube I9.
The side bars II and I2 are pivotally mounted in the center of the platform in gear casings 26 and 2| by stub shafts 22 and 23, respectively. The shafts extend through sleeves 24 and 25 in which the side bars II and I2 aremonnted'and the sleeves are positioned between. upwardly Vextended ends 26 and 2l of the'casing 2U and 28 and 29 of the casing 2l. The stub shafts 22r and` 23 extend through the upwardly extended ends ofthe gear casing and. through the sleevesl 24 and 25, as shown.
The gear casings. 2li and 2| are similar and the same reference numerals-are used on the in terior parts of each; As illustrated in Figure Ll the stub shaft 23 is provided with a gear segment 3G that meshes with a' Worm gear 3| onr a shaft 32 and the shaft 32 is provided with the Worm gear 33 that meshes with a worm Eri on a shaft 35, on the outer end of which a hand wheel 3G is provided and with the hands wheels extended. from the gear casings on each side of the platform the platform may readily be tilted or held in a horizontal position depending upon the patient.
The ends of the side bar II are provided with caps` 31 and 38, as shown in detail in Figures 12,
13 and 1.4. and the ends of the side bar I2 are provided With similar caps 39 and lit. The caps are provided with plugs 4 I as. shown in Figure l2 and-end tubesv 42 and i3 are mounted on the plugs.
The ends of the straps Ill at one side of the platform are wrapped. around. the side bar Il and secured to the bar by stitches Ml and the ends of.- the straps at the opposite side of the platform are provided with buckles 45 that receive short straps 46 positioned on the cross bar I2, asv shown in FiguresA 1 and 2. With the straps arranged in this manner the ends of the straps Ill are'released from the straps i8- so that the straps Ill may be extended under a patient on the bedand then secured to the straps 46 by the buckles d whereby the patient carrying .platform is assembled under the patient without disturbing the patient and without overexertion onthe part of the nurse.
The telescoping posts. i3 and. l are formed as illustrated in Figure 4 with the upper outer sections I3 and Ill slidable over the lower sections I5 and I. The pistons and packing glands in both posts are similar and the same reference numerals are` used for both. As illustrated in Figures the tube Iii is provided with a bushing di in which a piston rod 68 of a piston B9 is carried and the piston is-slidably mounted in the inner or lower tube IG, which forms the cylinder. Toplace. the patient-carrying platform in position on theibed, the telescopic posts I3 and I6 are raised and then the" platform of the present invention is moved longitudinally along the bed. The end of the bed can be manuallylifted in order to clear the crossbar I9.
The piston 49 which isV secured on the lower end of the rod 48 is provided with annuiai'fgroov '4 59 for a piston ring 5I and, as illustrated in Figure 4 the upper end of the tube i6 is provided with a packing gland 52 and the upper end of the packing gland is provided with an opening 53 for a Spanner wrench or the like. The outer surface of the tube I6 is provided with a keyway or groove 54 and a key 55, positioned in a socket 5E in the outer tube Iii travels in the groove 54.
The lower ends of the inner tubes of cylinders l5 and It are positioned in Ts. 51* and 58 in which the end sections of the base'arms' Il and I8 are secured and, as illustrated in Figure 1 extend upwardly and over in the form of goose necks and casters 59 are provided on the outer ends. The cross tube I9 connects the ttings 5l and' 58, as shown in Figure 3 providing' communicating means between the lower ends of the cylinders ofthe posts,

With the parts arranged in this manner the elevator may readily be rolled over a bed from one end thereof and also readily rolled from the bed.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In an elevator for bed patients, the combination which comprises a rectangular shaped frame having spaced side and end members with spaced straps having buckles therein extended across the said side members, a plurality of telescoping posts extended downwardly from the said side member of the frame and positioned midway of the length of the said side members, gear casings mounted on the upper ends of the posts and in which the side members of the rectangular shaped frame are pivotally mounted, means in said gear casing for elevating either end of the rectangular shaped frame, base members carried on casters on which the said posts are mounted, means connecting the lower ends of the posts, and means for supplying fluid under pressure to the lower ends of the posts for extending the length of the posts.
2. In an elevator for bed patients, the combination which comprises a rectangular shaped frame having spaced side and end members with spaced straps having buckles therein extended across the said side members, a plurality of telescoping posts extended downwardly from the said side members of the frame and positioned midway of the length of the said side members, gear casings mounted on the upper ends of the posts and in which the side members of the rectangular shaped frame are pivotally` mounted, means in said gear casing for elevating either end of the rectangular shaped frame, base members carried on casters on which the said posts are mounted, means connecting the lower ends of the posts, foot pedal actuated hydraulic cylinders carried by the said base members and having connections to the lower ends of the telescoping posts for extending the height of the posts, valves in the said connections, and means for actuating the valves in the said connections for holding the fluid in the posts and also for releasing the uid from the posts to lower the platform.
